Default Bottleneck Lesson with Loki

Seeing as this is SHOW & TELL........

This is a recent lesson I was giving, showing my student how to play the opening riff to my orphan lick called 'That San Francisco Freak'.

While explaining it, our big cat, Loki, is telling me he needs my attention.....

1930 Gibson L-5 in open D tuning, by the way.....

Enjoy!

Funny cat, but the main thing I noticed was the width of your slide. That's pretty big, is it better that way?

My aim has always been to generate a stronger fundamental note. Heavy strings (D’Addario EXP-16 wounds, .013 & .017 plains) require more mass to achieve that.
It’s certainly longer than it needs to be, but that’s a function of laziness. I cut it on my wet saw, and started using it immediately, and it’s just never bothered me enough to schlep the saw up from the basement.

It’s also very thick having come from a magnum champagne bottle, and its curve fits the 12” radius quite nicely.

PS- I have really big hands, and long ago figured out that it’s more comfortable for my finger to be able to curve inside the slide while the other fingers are doing that, naturally.
