I love getting in a flow in the shop- when all your energy is poured into your present work and things are movin' and groovin'. Unfortunately when this happens, photos take a back burner.... So there's a small gap in our story line here.

Nevertheless, the box is closed and binding channels have been cut.

When you have a large hole in a guitar, you need a large guide for your binding jig:

So why an access port? Necessity! It's pretty hard to glue on a bridge, bolt on a neck, or do any work inside without a typical sound hole....

As you may have noticed, circles are thing on this guitar. That same theme will follow into the neck as well.

I've got something pretty special in the works for the access port door. Stay tuned.

Several years ago, Cory Batson created a humidor in one of his guitars:

I'm liking this Chris! Seems like you've got a balanced approach regarding the look of the guitar. I especially like the simple white line inlay on the back. Look forward to hearing the end result!

Looking great! I'm getting a Crop Circles kind of feel with this one!

Chris - very interesting design with your holes theme on this guitar! I'm always interested seeing alternative sound holes and finding out what impact they have on the sound of the guitar. Looks great!

The most common question I've received on this guitar is, "What's the hole for?" Followed by, "How are you going to cover it?" We know what it is now. So let's see the cover:

It's held in place by both magnets and a stealthy key. From the outside it simply looks like an inlay and a strap button. It took a lot of thought and time to custom make all the hardware and I had a ton of fun doing it.

Going along with the circle theme on the rest of the guitar, the neck utilizes inlaid circles as well. The back of the neck near the head stock emulates the circles on the back of the body:

The fretboard plays off the idea of rising and setting:

That same theme from the face of the fretboard is also carried over into the side dots- which also rise and set:

Can anyone find a joint in the neck for the cantilevered section?

Ding Ding Ding. We have a winner.

The cantilever and tenon were formed by hand so there's no joint line or break in grain and figure... because neck sets are just too easy with power tools and jigs.

I figured the joint was in the humidor feature.

Through the magic of time, it's shiny!

Gluing on the bridge will be a bit different on this one, as it's going to require coming at the operation from the tail end. That's the reason the access port is necessary. So this is what I came up with:
