Default NGD: Gibson J200 Elite, 1998

Sold a Martin and an exercise bike and a couple other things and, after weeks scouring the internet, all the way out to Germany, France, and Japan, finally found this guy in Brooklyn, NY. Never knew there were so many variations in the J200 line but when I spotted this one, with the antique top, dark bridge, perfect back/sides figuring, abalone inlays, and fancy tuners, all my hesitation melted and I hit the "buy it now" on Reverb.

I had another thread on here asking people to talk me out of buying one, and the main complaint was that a lot of them are sonic duds. I figured this one would be at least passable but I'm delighted to say it sounds like a rose in bloom. Perfect.

Couple of threads that lead to this purchase:

Do you crave your guitar idol's guitar?

Could someone talk me out of an SJ-200 Gibson?

Watched the video, thanx, the guitar sounds great both with a pick and without.
Congratulations with the fantastic J200!

That one is definitely not a "dud"!
Gorgeous guitar. Is it 17" wide?

Nice guitar!

But now how about strumming out Engine Driver or some other Colin Strummer song?

I love the treble and midrange on those guitars.

You're going to get me wanting one again and that will get me in trouble.

I love my 1990 J-200 and yours sounds just as fine as mine.
Nice little performance too, good set of pipes and cool song selection.

Looks and sounds like you got a very nice J200. The wood on the back and neck is beautiful. Congrats!

Thank you Ryan.

Nice choice of song. I don't know that one as well as his newer songs, but it looks like a good strummer and lovely song. It's going on my "to learn" list.

I'd say you found a very nice sounding guitar.

Colin's songs are often fairly easy chord-wise, but he adds lots of details that always seem to be just right. He really likes that D-ish chord where you slide up the shape of a C Major a couple of frets. I think that's in the intro to Engine Driver.

I'd like to learn some basic harmonic technique. But nobody wants to hear me trying to learn the harmonica. So I can only play when I'm alone. Eventually maybe I'll get it. And someday I will buy a Gibson sj200. Would like to buy a Montana Gold model.
