Definitely the fine-grained bearclaw top. Looks a bit like a Smokies top (which it of course isn't) A no-brainer for me if the sound is the same.

I would go with the bearclaw. Nice looking grain, more uniform than the other one. Putting it bluntly, the other one shouts "packing case" at me.

Grain count and tightness has no effect on density, internal damping and stiffness. It only comes into the picture depending on how high you prioritize appearance. Just keep whichever guitar you like better.

First of all, nice looking guitars and great "problem" to have. Much like buying locally to have at least a couple to compare.

Personally, I don't love the dark streaks in the top one, and I don't love the incidental bear claw in the other one, though it's better than most. If pressed for an answer, I'd go bearclaw sight unseen.

Can't imagine they sound or feel exactly the same. Nothing here is enough of a difference to overcome which one I'd prefer playing. I can't imagine isolating the appearance of the top as a determining factor in this case.

Enjoy!

The top one, I can stand the weird runout strip on the bottom. Lots of Eastman’s have that on the parlors and I had to keep looking to find one that didn’t

Two votes (wife and me) for the first one.

Provided they sound the same, I'd also take the top one, no question...much nicer looking grain and the taller saddle is a big deal to me.

Oh, and congratulations! The BR140A and BR160A are super playable. I love the neck profile and string spacing.

I prefer the look of a wide grain top. The bear claw is nice as well..
