Default Conclusions Please

I read recently the top-ten, box-office blockbusters of 2018 consist entirely of remakes, sequels, and films based on old comic book characters. Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, Mission Impossible—Fallout, Antman and the Wasp, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Venom constitute the top ten box office hits of 2018. Now what conclusions should we draw from that?

That I saved a lot of money not going to the movies.

Hollywood ran out of ideas a couple decades ago.

The demographic that controls the movie market is not interested in stories that have to be developed, that takes some thought, and that are on a personal scale.

That's why the AMPAS had to add a new Oscar category- most popular, as opposed to Best Picture.

Ready Player One is my favorite movie of all time.

That, alone made it a great movie year, for me.

No conclusions can be made from this. However, there are many, many documentaries, shorts, foreign films & independent films... being made every year. As a voting member of the union, I am fortunate to receive electronic and DVD copies of all of the nominees for awards and I'm always amazed at the quality of original material released. The down side is that many of these have limited, to no, advertising budget. If you are in any moderate to large city, there are small independent or art movie houses that show these. You can search for them in your area and you might be pleased with the offerings. You might also be required to leave your mind open to new things. Try it.

Movies cost a lot to make. Better to pony up the big bucks for a proven formula.

Same reason networks waste airspace with “reality” shows.

And as an added bonus, no need to pay some pointy headed screen writer.

In addition, there’s a huge audience of folks who won’t notice that they’re watching the same thing over and over!

Obviously you've not thought this through. Every project from every song, every 15-second tv commercial and every joke you hear on late-night, to every news cast and movie, relies heavily on writers. Hollywood forgot that in 2007 when we/they struck for 5 months essentially bringing the tv/movie process to a halt. I'm not sure what a "pointy-headed screen-writer" actually is but you should thank them for their contributions.

I wonder how the votes would go if the voters had to go to the movies like everyone else?

In what way? To me the new cinema's are the best ever. They have electric recliners and table/seat-service and the best sound ever. I (can only speak for myself) go throughout the year to films that are, in my opinion, must see on the big screen films. Evaluating a film/movie it is not a monolith. Every voter votes on their own criteria. Certainly the movies I vote on are not always those awarded. From a SAG/AFTRA member's perspective, I vote exclusively on acting performance. The Director's Guild, Writer's Guild, Academy Awards - are all voted on on different criteria.

Really? Of all time? Haven't seen it, but it's not THAT highly rated online.

Added to last post - Then there are the film-festivals that many cities have that do screenings of many of the types of films I mentioned two posts above - indy, foreign, short/full documentaries.....attending with other's who appreciate great film. No, Iron Man won't be at those. However, many other's that will be spoken about for a while will be.

And now from Hollywood, the game’s final score once again:

Quest for Profitability: 99
Caring about Creativity: 0

It’s not a fair fight. 😊
