Default NGD - Emerald X20-7

So, it is finally here - my new X20-7. This is the only Emerald model with fan frets as standard. I juiced mine up a little with an amber top, and black back sides and neck, and added satin gold tuners. The colour combination turned out to be a no-cost option - any combination of standard colours qualifies. I'm very pleased with it - it looked a little stark on the shipping video, but under normal lighting, it is just what I wanted.

I'm about as equally gobsmacked as I was when I received my red X20 this time last year. I can't find a flaw on this; it arrived in tune, with a very pleasing action. Hitting that low B for the first time - woof. What a glorious sound.

A couple of pictures below - it's a horrid day here in the suburbs of Minneapolis, so I'll got for more when the sun comes out again.

Sweet David, sweet! We need to do another AGF event so I can hear that low B!

But...when the sun comes out?!?! You mean March 2020?

I like the colour combo, especially with the gold tuners. As someone who can barely play 6 strings, good on you for 7!

Beautiful David. I have an X20 baritone in amber. What is the scale of your low B with the fan fret?

Thank you for the pictures. The guitar is beautiful--you've made a number of nice decisions. Enjoy.

Now that you've done 6, and have 7, you might wonder what an 8 string guitar would look/sound like?

ENJOY

It's 27" on the low B, 25 1/2" on the E...

I don't think my fingers are long enough for an 8

Splendiferous. It's really quite splendiferous too.

I've spent some time with it this afternoon. I'm beginning (slowly) to understand where that low B fits in, in the grand scheme of things. Changing the tuning to BEAC#GBE was most interesting - that's a baritone with a high E. Taking the big B down to A works too. Tomorrow, I'll explore ADADF#AD - my favourite open D, with a big, fat low A.

Strumming it in its standard tuning of BEADGBD works really nicely too, just pulling in that low 7th string for a different emphasis.

It's a beauty. I'm going to have a lot of fun getting to know this.

Oh, and the fan frets? Why aren't all guitars built this way?

Congrats on the 7 string! I have thought that a 7 string X20 would be a cool guitar to have. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts after you have had it a while.

As for fan frets, I tried a guitar at Fret Central that had this feature and it would take me some time to get used to it. Maybe if I didn't look at the fretboard while playing...

Congratulations! I like the idea of different color carbon for the top than the back / sides. Not sure how well it’ll show a lot of the time given how dark Emerald’s carbon is in most light, but it should look good in the right light. As for seven strings and fan frets, I’m glad there are folks who know what to do with those and can enjoy them. Six is more than plenty for my limited comprehension...

Enjoy!
