That was very interesting. Nice craftsmanship. It could be called "How to Build a Guitar in 1,000 Easy Steps". I could do that, but, I don't want to.

Yep, that is one of the best guitar related videos on YouTube IMO.

I have seen this before but it's been a while. Exquisite craftsmanship!

Now I know where I'll be spending that extra $10K!

Best,
PJ

very cool video -i have seen it before. take the mechanics of it with a grain of salt though. this is a mid-career master craftsman with a large shop, employees, discerning clientele, and capital. the reality (imo) of 90% of us to achieve this level of manufacture puts this video into the "i wish i could... someday" class. while the tools and techniques on display are interesting, there isn't anything really new going on here. just solid craft.

but,,, what i do find to be the most important and valuable message here is his serious dedication to quality and attention to workmanship. this is a guy who knows what he wants and knows what it takes and stops at nothing to get there. this i think is the most important takeaway lesson from the video -imo, how to actually be a successful luthier.

as a side note, there is a post up on another forum regarding what level of tolerances to aim for when hand thicknessing tops, backs, and sides. apparently, the general forum consensus is, "plus or minus 5 or 10 thou or so" is considered acceptable. to me, most certainly not -and as seen by Mr Greenfield's craft ethic, not to him either.

It's probably the wrong question for a small-shop, "handmade" luthier. Mass-production factories work to standardized values and tolerances. Many (most?) small-shop luthiers use deflection testing and/or feel and or tap-testing to determine top thickness, rather than build to one value with a tolerance.

This is another good video from Goodall.

If you want to check out someone building one from scratch that is a totally unique design, check out Susan Gardener's acoustic build series on Youtube

Another good video. I've always been a fan of James' work. His son is no slouch either.
