Default Alligator gets a turtle!

Saw this gator (again, right outside our condo) making a beeline for shore. I knew something was going on!

Ah! He got a turtle!

I think the turtle thinks it’s all over....

Yeah, now I think it’s over....

But....something spooked the gator, and he dropped the turtle and headed back in the water!!!!

The turtle somehow manages to right himself, and goes back in the water! Right past the gator who retreated to the water!!!!

Really cool string of pics, especially that the turtle made it out alive...at least so it appeared. A couple of months ago, I wasn’t there to see it, but many visitors at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island near Fort Myers witnessed a gator capture and devour an adult White Pelican, which is the second largest bird in the U.S. with up to a 10’ wing span. Photos were taken of the encounter, but I haven’t seen them, at least not yet. Must’ve been gruesome to see. That’s nature in action!

I like turtles significantly better than alligators and crocodiles.

In fact I think of them as the reptilian version of mosquitoes: annoying and of "no" value.

We have been so overrun with them and we caused this.

I am not a fan of wanton exploitation of animals but in the case of gators and crocs, I think we should bring alligator shoes and handbags back into vogue.

Instead of leather shoes, makes Crocs out of crocs. Two problems solved.

Crocs (the footwear) should never be the solution to any problem.

Thanks everyone.

Tom-thanks and I’d actually like to see that. There are of course exceptions,
but I don’t find unaltered nature gruesome. It’s interesting, and we tend to anthropomorphize nature. It’s not a realistic view.

Tahitijack-the gators here have no interest in anything but turtles. People, dogs, birds-not interested. I’ve seen birds within a clap of the mouth go unmolested dozens of time. Still, I wouldn’t push my or anyone’s pet or safety on what I said. But I think these gators are acclimated enough that it’s not a looming issue. At least till breeding time. Which is almost here. So come on by!

Fazool-in some ways you are correct. But they (nor the mosquito) are
“of no value” in the world. Annoying, sometimes frightfully so, but they have their place and purpose.
The turtles in this small pond, number over twenty large females alone, and that’s with the gators. If they weren’t here? I’m sure we’d be over run.

jdmulli-correct answer!

Mark

P.S. To give you a reference, the FFWCC estimates that gator is 10-12’. The turtle in his mouth is huge. I have more pics of turtles, all of the 18-28” diameter. These aren’t your garden variety “little” turtles. Softshell and Snapping turtles. Big ones!
