Default 27" iMac price lowered substantially at OWC

No doubt this is an effort to sell off old stock before the revamped 27" iMac is released sometime this year, but the base price at OWC is lowered by $500 and the add-ons are also cheaper.

Out of curiosity, I configured one as I'd buy it on both the OWC and the Apple site (where the price has not been discounted).
3.6gHz 10-core i9
64gb ram
2tb ssd
8gb Radeon Pro 5500 XT video card

OWC price - $2599
Apple site price - $4299

I'd still want the new "M" class processors but if that doesn't matter to someone, this is a great deal.

EDIT: Unbeknownst to me when posting this originally, these are refurbished computers.

I'm sure you already know this, but these are factory refurbished machines. I don't have any experience with factory refurbished iMacs.

No doubt besides being refurbished (I'm guessing is the $500 discount) a lot of the difference in that price is the OWC RAM vs the Apple RAM
And why when I got my new iMac last year I just got the 8 GB minimum Apple RAM and got 128 GB from OWC

But anybody considering this be aware the Fans in these 10th Gen Intel iMac's are noisy and will likely raise the noise floor of your recordings, if your in the same room and using sensitive mic's

I got a refurb from Apple, but it's a '17 model. Very quiet.

Memory and disks add heat to the internals, and heat is what triggers the fans, obviously. If you're only doing audio, you don't need much memory, and even HD video gets by on relatively little. (What you can use with video is lots of cores and threads - also heat producers! But, 4k probably demands more - someday I'll find out if 64GB is enough.)

Yours being quiet not surprising as I understand it from the Gen 7 chips (start of 2017) onward to now Gen 10 ... intel chips ran progressively hotter and thus progressively noisier fan noise
Getting Turbo Boost switcher to disable turbo boost helps but can still be audible more so on video editing but also audio as well the longer you are recording .. Just thought people should be aware of what they might be getting into ......

I have a 2017 27" iMac as well. I don't think I've ever heard a sound coming from it.

I would just wait and get an M1 Max chipped version of the iMac when it comes out. it's a quantum leap over the previous Intel chips. I've been running a new M1 Max MBP 14" with 64 gb of ram and a 4 tb ssd, dedicated entirely to Logic, Console and digital recording. And of course Logic is native to the M1. No noise at all as the fans have never come on. Almost no heat and super fast. And that internal ssd has read/write times in the 5000-7000 mb per second rate. Unbelievable. Most of the recording I do are remote sessions recording my gf for various project and she's in an iso room, but when I record myself, it's all me in front of the laptop (and a 32" 4K screen attached) so the lack of noise is appreciated. I was using one of the OWC Duo Drive Thunderbolt and had to put that under the desk and build a box around it with 703 to keep the fan noise away.

I ordered a second M1 MBP around the middle of December which I hope will be here any day now. That one will be just for tethering the Canons for studio photography and for travel. Unfortunately I came across some seemingly unsolvable conflicts between Universal Audio's Console app and Capture One, the preferred tethering app for the digital cameras where the cameras just wouldn't show up at all. A new user was a viable workaround but often I'm moving from recording to photography and back, so another laptop it was. When the new M1 iMacs come out I suppose I'll be getting one of them as well. Thank goodness Apple (stock) has been very good to me over the years. I just wish they'd let you pay for this in shares rather than dollars - well, just sort of...
