John, I won't go into detail because it would take your jealousy into overdrive but let's just say today was a good day

Travis!!! I smiled when reading this it's so good to hear from you. I remember our PMs from years ago you were very encouraging then as you are now. You are so right this is extremely addicting (already have #2 figured out) and I am definitely in great hands. Hope you are doing well my friend!

Hard to believe, right? It's going to be a very harsh return back to reality next week...

Some day 5 observations:
1) The neck carving process is utterly fascinating
2) It is amazing to hear the difference in tap tone once binding is on the body
3) I'm not quitting my day job

Day 5 pictures!

Hammering in Evo Gold frets

Leveling off the fret ends

Cutting off excess wood from the neck blank before carving. This saw blade was so hot afterwards we should have had marshmallows nearby!

Using the safe-t-planer to rough thickness the neck before carving

More sanding of the top

Picture of the body with neck attached

Looks so good we almost forgot about the bridge!

Here is a mock up of where the bridge will be

So far so good! Still a ways to go but it's hard not to smile

Thanks for following along!

Vasu,
Congratulations on your foray into lutherie, I'm really impressed with the results! Maybe I missed the answer, but how deep is the deep body of your 00?

Thank you BlackKeys36! Nacogdoches is not too far from you, I say make it happen! I told Ryan 'if you build it, they will come.' You can be student #2!

Hi Martin thanks for the kind words. The guitar is 4-5/8" deep and coupled with the 14-3/16" lower bout width it's incredibly comfortable to hold. In fact I preferred it over the standard 4-1/8" depth for the 00 size body.

Thank you I really appreciate it! I could not be happier with how it turned out and with the experience overall. As the great Tom Petty once said, "the waiting is the hardest part" and it will be a test of patience for it arrive back from the finisher once it is shipped off next week.

Day 6 observations:
1) A pyramid bridge is the bee's knees
2) All of that really just happened
3) Parting is such sweet sorrow

Sorry for all the cliches. It's been an amazing week capped off by seeing the guitar come into its form today. That combined with the wonderful time spent with Ryan and Steve truly made it a memorable event - one I will not forget.

Drawing out the lines for the pyramid bridge

Steve showing me how it's made

Young grasshopper trying the other side under supervision

The final product - a thing of beauty

Sanding the bridge to match the radius of the top

Bridge pinned to the body for placement

Front of the guitar. It's hard to see it but a custom truss rod cover was made to perfectly match the headstock veneer

Back of the guitar with tuner holes reamed out. Notice the heel cap and how it matches the rear headstock veneer

Happy as a clam

Can you blame me?

Can't thank these two enough-they went above and beyond to make a dream come true

Believe it or not here is the real star of the show

Words cannot describe how good this was. I literally had to put my elbow on the table to prop myself up while eating. BEST. CHEESECAKE. EVER.

Unfortunately that is all for now. There will be a long hiatus while the guitar is at the finisher. I will be sure to update this thread once it is returns and I head back to the Kinnaird workshop for Day 7 - final assembly and setup!

Thanks to everyone who has followed along and offered words of encouragement. Your feedback means a lot and I can't stress this enough: if I can do this, you can too!

Fantastic!

Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

I had a similar experience a few years ago with Jay Lichty and chronicled each day for Fretboard Journal.

Again, thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder as you progressed through the build.... I suspect that it has forever altered your perspective on guitars...
