OK, OK, I'll order a copy. Because I'm weak and am easily influenced by peer pressure. Happy?

My piano teacher is teaching me music theory in small understandable pieces. And ties them into a song we are working on. We don't move on until I can show him the difference between a major and minor chord for example. How do you play Bbmaj7?

"The last thing I wanted to do was turn the guitar into some kind of study. I wanted to make music, the sooner the better".
- Glenn[/QUOTE] Well, OK. Perhaps you are simply more naturally gifted than I am and therefore able to play at an advanced level without understanding why things work. I've encountered plenty of players like this. I wasn't born with that great of an ear-- I've had to develop it over time. Greene's book (and others like it) provided invaluable structures and organized pathways for learning and understanding the neck. It just happened that Greene was my starting point. And it proved a revelation. I certainly didn't find such "study" laborious! For me, it was an exciting adventure of discovery. Up until stumbling upon it, I knew nothing about chord formulas, inversions, voice-leading or how to harmonize scales. I've never played Jazz (although I listen to it a lot). This hasn't kept me from applying the above to the Jam Band, Rock, Country, Blues and Americana music I enjoy playing. Different strokes... |

The implication that "nobody wants to talk about" theory suggests that players who don't spend a lot of time on theory are guilty of something, that we are not true or complete musicians. Theory does matter, but for me it matters most when applied in the context of a piece of music that helps me internalize what the theory means and what it's good for. - Glenn

Music theory is something to be absorbed as part of the process of learning. To that end, I'm paying attention when learning a song to what is going on in theory. My brain does not absorb theory out of context. But the more you know, the better off you will be.

That said. My keyboard player, (now deceased) was a music major in college. He and I butted heads constantly. Although knowledge is a powerful thing. You must know when to follow, and when to lead. For example, I brought in a song to learn. A song that has made millions of dollars for the artist. The intro was a keyboard part. Reggie refused to play the part correctly. Saying it was wrong, according to theory. We tried and tried to make the song work. At one point, I, a by ear guitarist, sat down and figured out the part. Sounded identical to the recording. Even he said what I was doing sounded just like the record. Trying to teach it to him, we both became very frustrated. I was at my wits end. I told him, "Reggie, it really makes me angry that you are a music major, and I've never had a lesson." " I can play it and you can't." He said "makes you angry." "How do you think I feel?" After 3 months of work. The entire song sounded great. With exception of the intro. We dropped the song. No sense in playing anything in front of people that doesn't sound good. Use every rescores you can. Just remember. Music is what YOU make it. |
