Default Martin OMC-28 and fingerstyle....

This just popped up on my radar. I bet it's great, the white binding not so much. But.... Hmm.

We have some that have been heavily discounted. Would be happy to knock a bit more off, too!

Don't know about the OMC28. I did have the OMC16E until I found a Larrivee OMV-09E. Still, I thought the Martin to be acoustically restrained, let's say, and the Fishman system of UST and condenser mic on a flexible boom a poor marriage. The Larrivee clearly made than apparent to me with it's better acoustics and B-Band system.

The Martin OM-28 is an iconic guitar. It works well with many styles, including fingerstyle, and is used in many genres and styles. That being said, there are many variations of the basic design, nearly all of which also work quite well.

Over the past 80 years or so, Martin has made several variations, mostly involving different bracing and, of course, different wood combinations. The OM itself is an minor offshoot of the original Martin 000. Other luthiers have gone further, including (i) adjusting the body shape, (ii) adding deep body depth or variable body depth, (iii) revising bracing, top thickness and top radii, (iv) adjusting scale length (without changing the model designation), (v) changing neck profiles and other neck measurements (again, without changing the model designation), among other changes.

Put simply, the basic OM design is a winner and variations of that design are (usually) also winners. Thus, there are many viable choices if you start with the question, "What about an OM-28 for fingerstyle?".

My OM-28ish guitar is a 1999 Bill Tippin OMT, which I've bought new 18.5 years ago. It's close to a Martin OM-28 except it has a deep body, slightly different bracing, a German spruce top with a slightly different thickness, radius and attachment design and, of course, one concentrated ounce of Bill Tippin magic. It's a wonderful fingerstyle instrument. My OM-18ish guitar is made by Julius Borges and varies in several respects from a current Martin OM-18.

I have an OMC-18E, the mahogany model. My bandmate has an 2016 OMC-28E. Both have Fishman VT Enhanced pick up systems. We use them through a PA and they both sound good. The 2018 OMC-28E has some changes, scalloped bracing, herringbone trim and open tuners. You have a choice of pickups the Fishman system or a Baggs Anthem. I haven't tried the new ones out but I keep looking.

Pre-2018 OMC-28E also had scalloped bracing. Otherwise you are correct sir.

I have an OMCLJ 28 (2 of them, actually). Great guitars - many would claim a Martin OM is the definitive fingerstyle guitar.

Man that's news to me, but then I don't get out much. (smile)

The definitive finger style steel string to me is a 12 fret with a wider neck and wider string spacing at the bridge.

Just sayin',
Dave
