Everything they told you is boilerplate and true. You "may" bring musical instrument on board - if there is space available. Period. No guarantees. No promises. The decision will be up to the flight crew at boarding. However, if you get to the gate and your guitar is not allowed on board, it will be gate checked, like a stroller, and returned to you as you leave the plane. Generally, the standard bag the Mini comes in will be fine.

You should never count on things going perfect -get a hardshell case

...I'm going to take: get a hardshell case.

--They SHOULD let me bring it on board, but they may not.
--The gig bag SHOULD be sturdy enough to protect it, but it may not be.

It's the only alternative with a near 100% guarantee of coming home with the guitar I left with.
