Just because I didn’t say it before: Thanks Mbroady for sharing your apple to motorbike comparison. I love those ‘real world comparisons’. At least it makes clear that a piezo pickup alone can cause ear cancer.

Larry is right, all pickups benefit from being played over a good PA (and some EQ, compression and maybe a tiny bit of reverb). And this can make samples 1 and 2 shine but, to my ears, never sample 3.

“ Apple to motorbike”....that’s funny. I like apples, and I like motorbikes, but not at the same time.

One of the best sounding systems I had (at least I remember it that way) was a 3 source K&K on board preamp system with a UST, SBT and a mic. loads of stuff in the guitar.

It was installed in a Blueridge BR-183, so I was not concerned about value or acoustic tone (which it sounded really good unplugged). All 3 sources had there own EQ. it was not a “sounds like your guitar only louder” set up but I could go from full throttle band to an intimate solo set with a small adjustment of each source.

I was recently given the same system by a fellow forum member. Not sure I want all that stuff in any of the guitars I have now, but I might put it my Voyage Air guitar. However.......I might get pulled over when going through the gate at the airport. It can look really scary as an X-ray.

I’m still on the fence. #2 has a slightly more 3D sound, but #1 has a natural sound that is taking EQ well. Added some low end and reduced the high end. Much nicer on all 3 but #3 is still painful to listen two

I think both 1 and 2 would be useable with a bit of EQ.

Regarding 3, you said you plugged it straight into a mixing desk. Was the input a high impedance one (Hi-Z)? I find that a K&K Pure Mini sounds much better through a Hi-Z input.

I liked #2 the best... and I suspect it's the Anthem SL. I think it would sound even better with a bit more of the True-Mic rolled off...

It was plugged into a mackie board, so not sure about the impedance.
When i run it though a great river pre (or the K&K pre) it sounds a lot better, but still not as good as the dual source pick ups with their proprietary preamps.

Preferred the Anthem SL sound over the others. the first and third sounded a bit pingy, had a metallic quality to them
