A couple that I have discovered thanks to listening to the "Acoustic Blues" station on Pandora are Pat Donohue and Mike Dowling.

Actually, this post reminded me to turn to the above station, and Chris Smither is playing a tune that I had given a thumb up, so I will add that name, too.

And another one I've loved since I started to appreciate music in general is Mark Knopfler, although for some reason I haven't gotten around to listening to his solo work.

Not a whole lot of Old School here.

Whenever somebody asks me who I wish I could play like I always give the same answer - Lightning Hopkins. Nobody out there like him. He could do it all. And I cannot even imagine a list of players that does not include Lonnie Johnson.

Others who have influenced me and who can still make my jaw drop:

Dave Van Ronk
Leadbelly
Memphis Minnie
Blind Blake
Tommy Johnson
Tampa Red
Scrapper Blackwell
Rev. Gary Davis
Blind Lemon Jefferson
Big Bill Broonzy
Curley Weaver
Charlie Patton
Bukka White

Well, you get the idea.

And no list of more contemporary players would be complete without adding:

Alvin Youngblood Hart
Ry Cooder
Richard Thompson
Jorma

I’m pretty young compared to the rest of this forum so I use YouTube a lot and so my taste is a bit different. In fact, I don’t even recognize most people that have already been mentioned. One of favorites is Tommy Emmanuel. Others are:

Sungha Jung
Gabrielle Quevedo
James Barthelomew

Sungha Jung has more of a “mechanical” style whiles James is the opposite. His playing is rather simplistic but he captures the tone and essence of the song quite well and Gabriella is in between the two. I think Sungha and Gabriella produce their own songs as well.

I like most of them. I'm not into the super bluesy players. I don't mind the really modern guys' playing, but their tone is a bit too bright for me.

I'll add:
Doug Smith
El McMeen

And since a few singer/songwriters have been included (Bruce Cockburn) that also do some fine fingerstyle work, I will also add:

Patty Larkin
Martin Simpson
David Wilcox

Best,
Jayne

This list works for me. But, hey, I'm old!

I'd add: Stefan Grossman and Ernie Hawkins, both students of Rev. Gary Davis (besides I went to High School with Ernie.)
