I almost always have a compressor on as well. I use modded Boss compressor. But I have to take it off when using the Q-Tron and on a few other songs that are finger picked and I need the dynamics. But yeah a compressor is almost always on.
I had bought the Boss compressor like 20 years ago and tried to like it but never could so I tossed it in my pedal box for like a 10 years or so. Then I heard about how you could mod one so I tried it and it made it super nice. Took all the hiss and noise out of it. At some point though I wanted to see if there was something better so I got a Dyna-Comp and thought... Why would anyone ever use this thing! Good gawd it was so noisy. I saw an add on my local craigs list where a guy wanted to to trade his SOul Food for a Dyna-comp so I jumped on it. The SOul Food is a great little compressor pedal. Not too noisy and very transparent. I like them! If I was going to run a noisy Dyna-Comp then my always on pedal might be a noise gate. |

A very good klon-clone. The klon-clone thickens the tone (low gain) and adds a lot of richness without going into distortion.

Not at home, but on stage I always had an MXR 6 band. Always on with my Jazzmaster.
Wish I still had it for nostalgia reasons. They fetch a decent sum these days so I'm not likely to grab one when there are more sophisticated units available for less these days. A used Boss GE-7 would more than do the job for me.

The Soul Food is a Klon clone, or semi clone anyway. It's a fantastic pedal. $86 at MF and Sweetwater. Hard to believe they're selling it for that low given all the great reviews.

If I'm playing anything other than old-time jazz standards, I'll have the Bluesey "on" all the time... it's a great little mini-pedal that provides just enough grit and breakup that is very touch-sensitive to attack and the guitar's volume controls...
I still can't get over how good this little peal is for such an incredibly low price...

Oh wait, I was confusing the Soul Food with the Soul Preacher, which is the compressor.... Never mind what I said earlier
The Soul Food does indeed get fantastic reviews. |

- 1uf to 4.7uf caps - the 4.7 adds bass (the 1995 mod) - added a switch for the mod to 15k resistor to add mids While this circuit nominally for electrics, and sounds amazing with a strat or tele, it works in the FX loop for acoustic preamps, too (don’t plug a high-impedance passive directly into it - yecch!!). When used below the clipping threshold, it adds to the tone. |

The Timmy pedal by Paul Cochrane is my always on pedal. The original pedals sell for about four times what they sold for when new. That tells you a lot.
The new MXR Timmy is affordable and it sounds authentic. The result of a collaboration between Paul and MXR. It's tiny but it sure makes a guitar sound big. It's great at the beginning of a pedal chain set as a clean boost and always on. Also works great set for distortion. Very useful eq. Named after Tim The Enchanter in a Monty Python film. I recommend it. |

The Soul Food is a great pedal at a great price. It's not just a "bang for your buck" pedal but a great pedal regardless of the price point. |
