as I said, see him live awesome - for 30 minutes or more. Then it becomes reminiscent of early Joe Banamassa. A genius with too much to say in an hour

I have seen and heard Billy 4 times in the last three years, all at the annual High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA.

The first time was at the midnight Troubador session, with 5 artists sitting in chairs at the front of a small room holding about 40 people. He was head and shoulders above the others in terms of voice and chops.

I saw him the next year standing in line for a smoothie. I introduced myself. He was soft spoken and shy, but a completely different person on stage. His hour long artist session that summer was devoted to the music of Doc Watson. He played with the band, soloed with a banjo on The Cuckoo, and sang one tune acapella.

This year, he had a new mandolin player and finally made it to the main stage, where he was superb until a pedal on his board quit. He had a total hissy fit, which is not too surprising since he and the band had driven in from Telluride just before the show. That was a long drive by any means.

I started to recognize some signature licks in his repertoire, but they were never poorly executed or losing time.

I find him the best thing since David Grier and Tony Rice.

I've been a Billy Strings fan for quite awhile, I think he is refreshing and brings a way cool vibe to the bluegrass scene...very gifted player still coming into his own.

He is very good, but personally I prefer the style of Mollie T.

Whether you like him or not I think the majority would say he is quite the talent. There is a lot of politics in the music business/industry and if he able to embrace that, learn how to deal with it , I believe he will be become a major label /entertainer.

Boy, I wish I could play like him. I'd probably 'overplay' a bit too!!

Every summer it seems like I get super into a band/album and this summer it’s Billy Strings and his album “Turmoil and Tinfoil”. Definitely a banger front to back. Bluegrass for a new generation, sings about meth instead of moonshine. Seems like a super nice guy too.

He did mentioned that in a JamBase interview. I don't know if they are dating, but If they are and ever have kids, look out! I'll volunteer to baby sit, LOL.

He is a very talented young man but I'm not a fan of his style.
Like others have stated, he overplays everything.
I would not pay to see him.

I also agree that Molly Tuttle is more to my liking.
She plays clean and smooth.

On the other hand, could Billy Strings be the Guitar Hero that everybody (on the internet ) says we need?

My definition is where the artist substitutes volume of notes and speed for things like judicious placement, emotion, soul, or whatever you want to describe as making things fit within a presentation. I want to be moved by the instrument in the player's hands, not the mechanics. I prefer a melodic presentation in whatever way it is manifested, solos, fills, whatever.

Guys like B.B. King don't play a lot of notes as in Joe Bonamassa, but they don't need to to reach their audience by doing that. David Gilmour is one of my favorites for the same reason. I dont know if that explains it well or not, just my take.
BTW, this is not a criticism of Billy Strings, I was just trying to answer your question.

Yeah, he's kind of a hot dog onstage, but so was I at that age. When you're a good young player, there's an element of:

"Hey, girls! Watch THIS!"

It sure worked for me, and I'm not as talented as he is.

I'm certain that the compliments from the breathless young women who rush up to talk to him after he finishes his sets mean a lot more to him than the mutterings of a bunch of disgruntled old coots on a guitar forum do.

Just a thought...

Wade Hampton Miller

Here here..

He’s a great player that has breathed new life into what can be a very closed and backwards looking genre (and I’m a big bluegrass fan)

His energy is fantastic and his playing and singing top drawer IMO.

As for overplaying I don’t agree - bluegrass is all about solo when the time is right..
