Andrew Mowry ~ 16 inch L-5 Archtop
I've always been a big fan of the 1920's Gibson L-5 archtop model played by Eddie Lang and Maybelle Carter. It's a beautiful design, and has a punchy mid-range sound. I asked luthier Andrew Mowry (Bend, OR) to build one, and enclosed here is an article on the outcome. We chose Western Big Leaf Maple for the back + sides, and it turned out great. It has a few cosmetic variations on the old Gibsons (tortoise binding, etc.) but it's pretty faithful to the original in most respects. Photos of the project start about 1/3 of the way down this page...

Wow! What a fantastic guitar! I really like the quilted back and sides. The colour is fantastic as well. Andrew's instruments look to be of exceptional quality.

That is really pretty. I particularly like the dark hand stained finish. I looks great with the dark binding and white lines

Mowry L-5
Andrew is great to work with. He kept me posted with photos and phone calls as he moved thru the build process. When finances permit, I'd like to have him do another project.
