The only DAW I've ever used is Reaper. I'm definitely not an expert but I can do what I need to do as far as tracking, cutting and pasting and using plug-ins. I use Steven Slate Drums Platinum 4.0 for my drums usually using my own patterns by directly writing to MIDI or using the pads of an Akai LPD8.

Used to use Auria on IPad but migrated to Reaper on MAC about 6 months ago - both great but Reaper has so much functionality.

Here's the tally so far.
5 Reaper 4 Audition 3 Logic Pro 2 Pro-Tools 1 Audacity 1 Auria 1 Cakewalk 1 Cubase Elements 1 Luna 1 Studio One 1 Waveform There are several on that list I've never hear of. I need to get out more.

Pro Tools for work. I’ve been at it professionally (professionally as is defined solely by getting a paycheck) since the Sound Tool days. I’m certain there’s some in the industry that have from time to time argued my degree of professionalism. When I say from time to time read everyday, all day. I’m so familiar with it I’m starting to yearn for the day I can retire and not look at it anymore
My music production DAW however is Studio One 5. For me Studio One does virtually everything in a more elegant manner than Pro Tools except for perhaps audio editing. I’d argue however Studio One isn’t far behind. They’re all so good it really is just a matter of picking one and rolling with it. That said if someone new to the DAW world asked for my recommendation (especially if it were musically centric) it would, first and foremost, be Studio One. |

ProTools for the past 20 years. I only use about 15% of its features (recording, editing and mixing), and I'm pretty familiar with that.
I bought Studio One last year, to learn another DAW and because AVID doubled the annual fee for ProTools. Again, I do not use most features and have become serviceable with the features I do use. |

Logic Pro X. Call it lower-intermediate. I get around fine but do relatively small projects (acoustic-y stuff primarily), only done maybe a 20 hours or so of recordings with over a dozen+ tracks. Not a MIDI guy at all, though I can poke around in it. The producer hat is a very uncomfortable fit for me, as well, so I stick with recording, mixing, pseudo-mastering (if needed).

What he said. I can do everything I need to with it. If I ever need more zippy whizbangetry I can upgrade to something else, but I’m good for now.

Started using Reaper since the lockdown pushed me back into recording. Previously used a Roland VS1680. Probably a low intermediate, easy transition to Reaper and many great support videos!
Forgot to mention I have been playing around with Garageband on iPad Pro, impressed with the quality of the recordings and simplicity of operation.

Started with Garageband but graduated to Logic Pro about a year ago. I'm comfortable doing basic recording, editing, midi, using loops, virtual instruments and the built in drummer, mixing and mastering. Based on what I use Logic for I guess I'd classify myself as lower intermediate. Based on what Logic is capable of doing I would have to classify myself as somewhere between a nematode and an annelid.

Acid Pro and Sonic Foundry with all the Cakewalk, Pro Tools and Waves software. There's a story here but that's for another time. I was dismantling my recording systems and ran into some stuff I did and now I think I will play with it again this winter. I might even record some acoustic guitar.

For this re-tabulation, I included the pricing I could find for each daw. If anything is in error, let me know and I'll make the correction.
I mentioned earlier that I'd never heard of some of these. Those would be Audition, Auria, and Waveform. My Adobe CC subscription is the less expensive one since Photoshop is my only real need in their lineup. I didn't even know they made a daw. 6 Cockos Reaper ($60 or $225) 5 Apple Logic Pro ($200) 5 AVID Pro-Tools ($300 + $200 per year or $35 month) 4 Adobe Audition (part of Adobe CC or $21-$31.50 per month) 3 PreSonus Studio One ($400) 3 Bandlab Cakewalk Sonar (free-$500) 2 Audacity (free) 1 WaveMachine Labs Auria ($50) 1 Steinberg Cubase Elements ($100, $550 for full program) 1 Universal Audio Luna (free but requires UA Apollo interface) 1 Traction Waveform ($119-$749) 1 Magix Acid Pro ($200) With a $60 option, it's not a surprise to see Reaper at the top of the list. If I was just starting, Pro-Tools would be an unlikely choice due to the expense. Even though I paid my initial costs over a decade ago, the doubling of the annual payment from $100 to $200 left a bad taste in my mouth but they offered a window where you could buy re-ups at the old price and stack them. I'm good until 2026. I'll reassess my needs at that point. I'm guessing the Audition people were lured by the CC package rather than just the daw itself. That would make sense to me if I were using some of Adobe's other software. I'm curious to know if the Logic Pro people started out using Garageband and saw Logic Pro as the next logical step.

Have been using Protools LE since 2003 and now HD Native since 2010
I realized I spent 7 years and was still only at in low intermediate level So in 2011 I signed up for a complete year longe Advanced Music Production in Pro Tools, Masters Certificate course at Berklee Collage of music . And became fairly proficient at editing and mixing up to about a 40 tracks in Pop and Rock productions. Since that time I have slacked off considerably and forgotten enough that I would categorize my self as I suppose an advanced intermediate. I can mix and edit audio and midi pretty well, and now usually record between 6 to 12 tracks. I also use Studio One 4 and plan on getting 5 And still have Reason but will have to upgrade it now to work with the current version of PTHDN

My biggest Pro-Tools complaint is the midi edit window. There's not enough contrast and it really strains my eyes. There are options to change color, but none of the colors changes offer better contrast. It's the same problem in a different color.

This is a very timely thread, as I'm just getting started with this stuff.
I'm using Garageband, and rate myself as Rank Amateur, already thinking I need 'something better', for no real reason other than that I'm a guitar player, and don't we all do that all the time? If I'm going to invest time learning something, I'd really rather only have to do it once, so I'll be re-reading this for hints as the thread progresses. One question though - no love for Ableton Live around here? I got a 'lite' version with my FocusRite interface. I also have a very helpful friend who's something of an expert with it, so from that point of view, it would seem like a good choice.
