Default Maton Pickup Through Tonedexter-Waterloo added

While exploring some options, some kind of Maton sacrilege probably, I played my Maton Messiah 808 using just the undersaddle portion of the pickup system - internal mic turned off - and ran it to a Tonedexter file I made ages ago with a Neumann KM184 mic.

Tonedexter % about 9 o'clock on the dial...just on.

I like the result - handy perhaps if the internal mic is giving drama...noisy room, or in my case a noisy floor fan blowing at me (hot here), storm outside.....and noisy household!

So a short blues on the Maton plugged direct from Tonedexter to iMac/Garageband:

I think you discovered what several image gurus have mentioned—the TD really works best with piezo pups, as it was designed. Im still experimenting and learning with the TD (including a Maton with KK mini pure) and loving it. Also, as the experts advise, I put away my nicer condenser mics, and use a relatively cheap ($88) Presonus reference small-dia condenser. Much more than I guessed, mic placement is probably the single most important factor. Definitely helps to arrange a comfortable set up, where everything is within reach and easily tweakable.

Thanks!

I have also previously used a Shure SM57 for Tonedexter files....makes it sound like you used a ...SM57! (used to use one live for years). So if you 'know' the sound of the mic you use to make the wavefiles, you should recognise it.

The latest firmware captures the characteristics of the mic really well.

I have not updated to the latest firmware as yet......have been meaning to buy an SD card......a long drive for a little card or delivery makes me feel like I need to buy ....something else!

Can you do the FAT32 on a Mac laptop?

Did you do the upgrade the TD with a MacBook? I see mine has a never used card slot on the side.

I do have a card reader from the days of transferring photos from a digital camera! The camera actually has an SD card, but it is still working good, so.....leave that and get a new card. Today!

Yup. I have a mid 2015 MacBook with that SD slot that I never use as well. Just put the card in. In disc utilities, choose ‘erase’ and there’s a drop down to select the format. A new one might already be formatted properly. Then download the latest firmware from audio sprockets and drag the 3 files over to the card. I just did this today.

Done, thanks - it all went well.
I will try a new file a bit later.

After reading about the new firmware, I went back to the Tonedexter. I made wavemaps with three different mics, a Neuman Km184, a Neumann TLM102 and a DPA 4099G Core, and the Tonedexter captures their character perfectly. Now I use the Tonedexter instead of the DPA 4099G Core and there is almost no audible difference between the two.

I agree. There is still a small difference but it’s the closest I’ve heard and truly impressive.

Thanks Sprucetop!

I made a new wavemap with the new firmware update...I didn't want to overwrite the Maton map from above as yet....

Here is a short blues shuffle played on my Waterloo ladder braced WL-14L with a K&K Trinity installed - if I run a normal guitar lead out, it is just the pickup, no internal mic....very versatile, eh? If I get mic problems, just run the Tonedexter version! Pretty happy with it - first up, probably should have practiced the playing a bit more but I just hit record and started....

Used my Neumann KM184 and hooray, hooray, hooray! The track sounds like a ladder braced guitar in a mic! Hooray again... and you can’t hear the two dogs over my back fence barking and howling!
