Peter Ostroushko, farewell.
Hasn’t hit the news yet, but posted to Peter’s Facebook page.
Heart disease, 67 years old. Sigh. Play on, Maestro... https://youtu.be/YgJn2F6lMcM

His version of "One More Spring" on Prairie Home Companion back in the '80s was just wonderful. Chet Atkins on guitar, Johnny Gimble on fiddle. Garrison Keillor wrote the song, about small town life.
I saw a video of Peter a few years ago. He had put on a lot of weight and didn't look healthy. But he still had the musical chops. |

Very sad news. Saw him in concert many years ago, he put on a great show. Miss PHC and all the great performers that were on it, most notably Peter.

Aahhh, bummer. I will have to go dig up an old album I have - a little folk/string band with him in it. I got it back in the early 80's when I was in college up in Minneapolis.
Sorry to read this.

Versatile player, apparently largely self-taught.
Here's a blog post with a link to Peter playing what may be the saddest version of "You Are My Sunshine" ever played at the send-off show for the old MPR Morning Show: You Are My Sunshine

Tim O’Brien posted a very nice tribute to Peter yesterday on his Facebook page. That was the first I heard of his death. Apparently, he had suffered some severe health problems the last few years and could no longer play mandolin. So sad.
I used to see Peter play (oftentimes with Robin & Linda Williams) back in the 1970’s at my college coffeehouse in Wisconsin. Always enjoyed the heck out of his times with us. He was so talented. And of course we can’t forget that he was tapped by Bob Dylan to play on Blood on the Tracks when Bob re-recorded some of the tracks over In Minneapolis. How cool to be a part of that project too. Great musician. Sorry to hear of his passing. |

I read a piece about him growing up among the Ukranian folk in Minneapolis and was a member of a musical family. I'll bet he could play balaiika well too---probably anything with strings. I'll miss him for sure!
