Default Photography question

Dustin, beautiful guitar! I can't wait to hear it.
On another note, very impressive photographs. How did you manage to avoid getting reflections? Especially on the ABW? I have tried to photography my guitars, and what I usually end up with is a "selfie": my face/camera reflected back at me -- especially on a dark wood like ABW.

There's a few of things - first have to get soft lighting from several angles, I have two studio lights that move around constantly depending on the shot, then you have to get rid of anything nearby that's casting harsh light which will appear in reflections, I also usually wear all-black when I shoot guitars to avoid any logos or colors reflecting in the tuners or highlights. I have two room dividers I put black sheets over to surround the guitar, flattening potential reflections on gloss finish. If you own a mirrorless camera you should shoot in raw to recover details later in post production. That's where alot of sharpness and dimension comes back. That's about 75% of the nitty-gritty. The rest is properly exposing on the camera and nailing focus on the desired parts you want to highlight. Sometimes I use a tripod, other times handheld. Most shots are with 35mm or 50mm and some are with Macro lens such as the parts that are less than 12" wide.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk. lol go take some photos!

Default Finally a sound clip!

Hey all,

Hope everyone stopping by is safe and well.

Taran was gracious enough to upload this one-take performance of my arrangement of "Wichita Lineman" by Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb to their channel earlier, love to hear your thoughts! No EQ or compression added to best represent the sound...had Elixir strings on for this recording. More video to come! Headphones highly recommended

Enjoy the weekend!

Only listened on phone speakers so far and it still sounds so good. I love this arrangement.

Default "My Favorite Luthiers" EP.1 Taran Guitars

Hey all,

In addition to sharing the full take of "Wichita Lineman" for Taran's YouTube channel I thought it was an ideal time to put together the first episode of a YouTube series I've been wanting to do for some time called "My Favorite Luthiers".

These videos will feature pro-grade audio and photos along with stories and discussion about guitars from the featured luthier and what I think makes them unique. Hope you enjoy and feel free to subscribe to the channel if you'd like to see more! Next episodes will include Rebecca Urlacher, Marc Beneteau, Mark Hatcher (another favorite here, it seems!) and Larrivee Guitars.

It was a pure joy to hear Matt and Karlijn nail the takes at the end of the video on their first try. Hope you enjoy the discussion. I'll be sharing another video of a new tune I wrote recently on the Taran in the coming weeks. Cheers and thanks so much for the support and joining the thread.

The videos really are great and provide a real sense of what the instrument can do across the different style and technique between the rather excellent players ;-)
