Having a guitar built by someone so meticulous and uncompromising, and following the progress every few days on a thread as this is truly exciting. On a lesser scale it is like having a truly great chef produce an extravagant tasting menu. Every couple of days there is another delight or course to see/ experience.

I am generally not the most patient fellow. I gotta admit I can hardly wait till it's finished.

Gluing on the top. Back is already glued.

Looks a lot like a guitar now.

I again can't resist taking a look with the neck on it.

Binding and purfling next.

Howard...that is absolutely beautiful! How wide is that lower bout? Almost looks like a 000.

Good eye, Mesa. It's a big 00: 14-1/2".

Default Scale Length

Howard – what is the scale length on the guitar? Do you think 25” or 25.25” on such a model would produce volume/tone you would find satisfing?

I used 25", so the answer must be yes.

Binding is all on. Pics soon.

Lovely. Pity I can't get a tactile experience with this guitar. RedCloud - a blessing.

Here are a few binding and purfling shots. I'll get more of an overall look (with more natural color) when I've finished scraping the bindings.

Howard:

I really like the bindings and purfling. It appears elegant, to my eye, and really works with the Pernambuco! I wanted to you to use Pernambuco for its tonal properties; but I was a little worried about the guitar ending up too orange???. The different and subtle colors in the rosette, bindings, fretboard bindings, and purflings along with the African Blackwood really come together to enhance the Pernambuco.

Superb!

Bindings are all scraped and sanded here, except for the soundport, which I usually bind last.

I bound the soundport this afternoon.

And I set the neck. On this style of guitar, the neck gets set before finishing; prior to final shaping of the heel, actually, so I can make the heel continuous with the sides.

Guitar Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) provides a frequent source of discussion on this Forum. The marvelous thing about having an instrument hand-made by a luthier, let alone someone as talented as Howard, is that the excitement lasts so much longer than a simple purchase at a guitar shop. These talented luthiers are "enablers", to be sure, when it comes to "GAS". Yet they make the illness a pleasure to suffer from!

That recurve body design is beautiful... as is everything else about this guitar. Looking forward to seeing and hearing it when finished. Cheers, Berf.

Default Lacquering

Scott's guitar is now in the finishing process. This is a slow moving part of the job. Here it is with the first few coats of laquer.
