I don't think too many folks are aware that Jesse penned "A Showman's Life," which George did well with. Some other good covers were Buddy Miller and Gary Allen.

Sorry the video's not better quality.

Great timing, I just started learning ''A Showman's Life'' to sing with my jam group. For my money, it' the best country song I've ever heard.

Here's the original George Strait version;

Funny that it was written by a twenty-two or so year old guy living in Canada. My girlfriend had the album so I must have heard it back then but Jessie's version never meant anything to me. It had to be at least twenty years later that I heard George Strait's version and it blew me away. Went to look up who wrote it and, holy crap, it was Jessie Winchester. Looked up the album and, holy crap again, I must have heard it a hundred times by Jessie.

Maybe it was because I didn't have any ''wear and tear'' on me yet. Maybe it was because George Strait's singing just drives this song right into your core.

George Strait really does know about the ''wear and tear''. I think the old George in the live video just nails it.

I just don't know how Jessie, in his twenties, was able to write such an emotional masterpiece.

Yeah, old George would certainly know about the "wear and tear" for sure. I did a rough survey of well-known musicians one time, and their average number of marriages was three. Gregg Allman, at six, would be an outlier, but not the only one.

Yes, beautiful song, full of old wisdom. I think of John Fogerty and how he wrote album after album of classic songs before the age of 25. Talk about touched by an angel.

thanks, low, good to keep the Jesse thing goin',
scott

Now, when you say, "Another one I've never heard about," did you mean Jesse Winchester as an artist, or just this particular song from Jesse?

Let me know, as I'd like to post an album suggestion for you to get a great overview of his music.

thanks,
scott

I just added Yankee Lady to my playlist. It’s an old favorite and my voice matches up nicely in the Key of A.

Another of Jesse's "keepers" for sure, Has. Wow, what a writer.

My problem with these old singers is that I only add the songs I know to my Amazon song list. Inspired by this thread, I just went and added to Jesse songs that I don't know. Time to find some new stuff!

Brand New Tennessee Waltz was my all-time favorite Jesse Winchester Song. I need to introduce it to the guys I play with. Yankee Lady is another JW favorite.
