Default Getting into ukuleles

Felt like it was time for a little break with the guitars.

Bought this one last month in Hawaii. Kala Triback. All solid woods. Spruce, IR and Mango.

And, this one just came in the mail. I'iwi. All solid koa.

Wow nice! I picked up ukulele for a bit. Great to have one around. Discovered it helps to be a much better singer than I am to pull off playing the ukulele. But it is fun and the grandkids love it.

I would warn you about the slippery slope of getting into ukes... But you're already on your backside sliding downhill!

The soundhole pattern on your second, to my admittedly uninformed eye, is so Keola Beamer! It SCREAMS Hawaii! Forgive me if it's more than a Keola thing. That's just who I associate it with.

Love the 3 piece back on both of them!!!!

Those of us who can't help but smile when we open our cases are definitely blessed. I've been in that camp since my first pawn shop el cheapo guitar in the '70s

Man, you dropped some serious coin. Those are the most beautiful ukes on the planet.

I'd love to try that I'iwi...I'm guessing it came from HMS?

I think many tend to dismiss ukes as musically limited or toys...the cheapies perhaps but a great uke is a joy to play and hear.

And those are very nice...enjoy!

Beautiful ukuleles. I hope they sound as good as they look...they are real eye candy as they say.

K20C...Those pics are of beautiful ukuleles. Well done sir!

What really blew me away about the ukulele was hearing and seeing the owner of Willie's (Nate) in St. Paul wandering around in the store playing all manner of fingerstyle solo versions of various standards on a decent quality ukulele.

The poster who mentioned the difference in sound of a really decent ukulele vs the really inexpensive models was spot on. I bought all three of my ukuleles at Willie's (including the one that Nate had been playing, though I got it a year later). Mine are one of each of tenor, concert, and soprano. The tenor and concert are new Hawaiian models, and the soprano is a 1925 Martin 2k. I learned with guitars that it is not a bad idea to do it once and do it right, rather than constantly trading up. In the end, you will probably spend quite a bit less money and have decent ukuleles right from the start. From your photos, I would say you are doing similar.

You will have fun with your ukuleles, and you don't have to sing to do so.

Tony
