Nice SJ Mau! I am enamored with the 42 appointments myself. This one is going to be awesome. I hear Maple makes for a great recording guitar. Can't wait to hear your recordings. Really special!

Thanks, Dennis. The guitar will be officially mine when the pickguard is glued on... I'm really looking forward to seeing the final result. Just a few months away...

Thanks, Dave. I'll be chewing on the same guitars for a while after this one. Three 42-style SJs is more than I ever dreamed of.

Aren't you worried that the bite marks will have a negative impact on the guitars tone? Will you make homemade picks from the wood chips?

No -- I would blend it with tobacco and smoke it up.

Here's the latest photo update directly from Circle Pines:

Smile Maple Olson

That is the nicest looking maple guitar I've ever seen. The ivoroid binding and tail wedge are a classy touch. I can't wait to see the finished photos.

In the last photo, yours certainly stands out as the albino in the class. Even the spruce top looks lighter than the others, which I like.

Congratulations (again).

After Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Circle Pines is the place in the US that I've visited most often...

Thanks, John.

Albino is a good way to put it...

Jim said he picked the most pale and figured set of maple from his stash. Not sure how the top compares to others as the lighting in the group shot is a bit inconsistent -- but it does look silky smooth with minimal visible run-out so I'm happy.

I'm also very excited about the ivoroid binding.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out... looking nice already. Maple is one of my personal favorites, too. I like how he did the switch to dark binding on the headstock backstrap.

Thanks, JR.

I believe Jim typically matches the binding of the back plate with the one used for the head plate -- mostly ebony with the occasional rosewood.

The standard purfling is WBW on the front plate -- and on the back plate I think Jim matches the purfling scheme used on the body of the guitar. On a guitar with dark(er) back and sides, Jim uses WBW whereas on a guitar with light(er) back and sides (e.g. maple or mahogany), he goes with BWB.

Default a little off topic but?

I don't have enough for an Olson, but am considering a Applegate SJ. Does an Applegate SJ have enough headroom to flatpick and strum? I am not a finger style player yet. I am learning. Ugggh I am sooooo confused
