Default Mattresses - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for a Senior Citizen

The title says it all. I'm 68, overweight and have a bad back and shopping for my last mattress. What should I look for, and what should I avoid. Let's keep the price under $500....

I'll give my advice although no one ever takes it...

I was in a spot about 4 or so years ago where I had a terrible back and I couldn't afford a new mattress. We ended up getting a 3-inch memory foam topper for our bed via Amazon. It took a day or so to get used to it, but now I absolutely love it. I think it was less than $200.

Lol... well that's a little different, but I still hope you might end up needing one more after this one.

The only thing you will see at < $500 are older springcoil (only) mattresses - ones that have no layer of foam on top. For a bad back, a foam/mostly foam mattress is recommended. $800 or more.

There was review and report on mattresses in recent issue of Consumer Reports. Might be in your local library or online.

Best bed I've ever owned was a water bed. Probably can't touch one for under $500 if you include the frame and platform.

On mattresses, we took a gamble that great ratings from CU and COSTCO on the Novaform they sell direct might be as good as the ratings and yes, true. It was a fraction of the cost of same type in mattress stores and a year+ later we're still super happy. Think about how much profit must be in mattresses with those mostly empty stores all over the place selling them for so much money.

Injuries and genes are not on my back's side so I'll offer this advice if you're looking for a bargain and improvements. Lose weight. Seriously. Everything will work better, feel better stuff will cost less and in my case the brain even works better.

No one among my siblings and cousins seems to be able to escape the back problems but those of us who've maintained a good weight and activity do much better. You can do it. The change is like your playing music - it takes some learning, it takes some practice, you need to stick with it, and you get much reward for doing it.

Sincerely, and with the best and warmest wishes - good luck with better health and the back. Even with surgery my sister and one cousin got the most benefit with life a good style. Our siblings and cousins without? Not so much. My belt loop position and pant size is like a gauge that measures life's physical problems. I wish you luck!

I've got two Tuft and Needle mattresses (the original and the Mint). I'm very satisfied with both. The original is about a year old. The Mint is only 4 months old. No issues with either of them.

I tried a foam topper for a long time. I found it to be too "hot" and lacking support. It felt great as I first crawled into bed, but not so great in the morning. The T&N mattresses provide good support without feeling hard. They are also much "cooler." I have yet to wake up soaked in perspiration with a lower back ache as I did with the memory foam topper.

The Twin original runs $325, Full is $475 and Queen is $575. 100 night trial period.

Like guitars, the mattress experience is highly subjective, but these worked for me.

At least in my experience, the worst thing for a bad back is a soft bed. As you sleep, your torso sinks in further than your legs and that alone can put your back out.

I always had back problems in my early 30s until I learned to sleep on firm mattresses, on my side and with a small pillow wedged between my knees. This keeps my back and pelvis aligned as I sleep and as a result, I rarely have back problems, though I turned 60 last year.

Consumer Reports cheapest ($500) highest rated (17th) innerspring mattress is Denver Mattress Doctor's Choice. Hope this helps. I've never heard of Denver Mattress.

I can't recommend anything for $500. But if you're overweight with a bad back, spend the money on a Select Comfort (Sleep Number) bed. I bought one 13 years ago after my back was broken in two places and it's the best thing I ever did.

+1 for the Zinus mattresses.

I'm 63 and average weight w/o any back problems. The King size Zinus mattress (including a steel bed frame) was right around $500 and I couldn't be happier.

The mattress is foam and soft but w/plenty of support for me. The frame is steel and simple and goes together well, but needs to be tightened a time or two after use since it gets a bit creaky if you don't.

Frame: Zinus Modern Studio 14 Inch Platform 3000H Metal Bed Frame
Bed: Zinus Memory Foam 12 Inch Green Tea Mattress, King

I have no financial or any other interest in this company, these items or the seller whatsoever.

I love acoustic guitars!
