Thanks TomB'sox, I'd be pretty nervous about the stability of a neck that had as much figure as the body wood has.

Default Josie update

I haven't done any updates lately on this Josie model I've been working on.
The body is together and I've been working on the neck;

It has a crazy figured Cocobolo fretboard to go with the quilted Maple;

The neck is flamed hard maple with a cross grained Cocobolo center laminate;

The headstock overlay is the same quilted maple that the back and sides are and it has Cocobolo accents that are beveled;

The back strap is a maple burl;

I'll be doing the fret work and final clean up tomorrow and Monday and it will be ready for finish. I'll take pictures of the whole guitar before I send it off.

Thanks!
Mark

Mark,

You HAVE to STOP this. I have closed my list through next year and you keep "clawing" your way back to me. It's like a bad (or good) Supremes song!!!!!

Seriously - STOP IT!

Thanks ross748!

I have the body and neck basically cleaned up and ready for fretting on Monday. Here are some pictures of the assembled guitar. It is dry on all of these pictures because if I wet it the figure on the maple is so ridiculous nobody will see all the work I did on the Cocobolo trim!:

Thanks for viewing!

Mark,

Do your guitars come with a good divorce lawyer?

THAT IS SWEET

Thanks Chris,

Sorry I don't offer an option for a divorce lawyer feature at this time.

Mark, that is outstanding. I really like the cocobolo back strip extending right up the neck....and that fret board, oh my, that is just amazing...., the endgraft inlay has such an organic feel, this is one of those guitars that looks so good dry that one doesn't even think about what it will look like with finish...holy cow....

Thanks Tom,

When I first saw this billet of quilted maple I was so impressed with the pattern of figure and how much this domestic piece was so much like the exotic "Tree" mahogany. I try to imagine and follow a theme in the look of each guitar I build.
I knew right off I had to make a wavy flow theme for this wood. That is one reason I chose my Josie small jumbo model with a Floretine cutaway as that design has the biggest, roundest curves of any of my models. It's why I chose the wavy grained fretboard and all of the bevels. I went with the high contrast Cocobolo to contain it in a red frame and it takes that much contrast to not loose the curvy guitar lines of the guitar's shape. I feel that long strait line going the length of the back and neck just makes all the curves look even more curvy. It's also why I just had to design a new end graft.
The trick is to pick your theme and have every design element serve it, not distract from it. Purposeful intent goes a long way!
