My entry to recording just started this last year..and is ongoing..
I started with a TASCAM DR-05 (Still use a little)
Told my wife what I wanted for Xmas
I got a Zoom R8 which I'm learning how to use daily
Been watching video's on how to record vocals and guitar at the same time on a budget.
A couple of months ago I got a hold of three Portable Office Partitions cloth covered they are about six foot high So I boxed myself a little 8x6 room in the garage to record in.
Been trying out Condenser Mic's and Dynamic
After this morning I watched a Video on the Vocal and guitar recording and I've made a leap in the sound of my recordings that I can't wait to fine tune after I get home today(Vocals were a little too loud over the guitar in a quick before shower recording) lol

I still use Audacity as I'm learning Reaper I found some helpful information on Audacity here after a search..Mainly to get better Reverb, But I will eventually move totally to Reaper
