Default Pickup costs more than the guitar

Anybody have a pickup costs more than the guitar situation going on?

I'm considering putting a DeArmond 210 in a Gretsch Jim Dandy or Americana to play slide on. If so, the pickup would be worth more than the guitar.

Thoughts?

Why not? You can always remove it and put it in another guitar.

Get an expensive pair of shoes to wear when you perform. This way when you think you may have spent some money foolishly, you can look down and have a reminder that there are other things you can waste money on. Unless you tap dance, your guitar will sound better than your shoes.

How true! I love cheap instruments. My friend only performs and records with his Jim Dandy and it is a gem!

i have a 1933 supertone dark knight Parlor guitar.
i have a sunrise soundhole pup installed. A perfect
example of what your talking about. It sound great if it's
not pounded. The light stripe on the bass side of the fretboard
is actually a light color variation (stripe)in the ebony. it's solid birch. top, back ,sides..
I get a lot of comments on this when i play it out... Lol

I have a very nice Greg Bennett model medium jumbo Samick guitar (spruce/rosewood, all solid wood) with only $380 in it at the moment. ($200 used plus $180 for professional crack repair and Barbera Soloist installation). I currently have $385 worth of pickups in it. ($160 used for the Barbera Soloist and $225 for the MiniFlex2Mic new.)

The guitar will out-cost the pickups if I swap out the 2Mic for one of my luthier friend's custom JJB installations ($110), but of course I need a $399 ToneDexter to help my pickups sound their best.

I have a used Martin DX1 with an LR Baggs M80 pickup in it which cost a little more than what I paid for the guitar. It’s a great gigging instrument!

I have a $40.00 Ibanez Concord that I got from a yard sale. It now has a LR Baggs M1 passive in it.

Extending the picture slightly, unless you're going into the PA you might want to include the downstream processing and interfacing, preamps, FX, DI, etc.

Not that this makes decisions any easier, of course but it allows you to manipulate the equation in whatever way you need to justify your expenditure (you're welcome). Remember, amplified crap is just like crap, only louder.

I have a £180 guitar (LAG) with a £180 pickup (Baggs M1 active) and it sounds great. I've spent a scary amount on experiments with string types to make it sound reasonable.
