Default Acoustic Pickups and Tone

I have no experience with installed pickups on acoustic guitars. I had the opportunity last week to pick up a 2018 Spruce / BRW McConnell. This is a fabulous and relatively hard to find guitar but I had reservations because it had an aftermarket pickup installed by the previous owner. I peeked inside and saw that there were two transducers glued to the bridge plate along with some wiring and electrical components. There are not tone or volume controls on or in the guitar.

Here is my question to the talented luthiers on the forum: Will the weight of those components affect the acoustic tone? Extra weight on the soundboard doesn't sound like something you would want to have. Any problems to be aware of if I had my local shop go in and remove this apparatus?

Thanks for the help
Cincy

Is there a battery in there too or is the pickup passive? If the latter then I wouldn't worry about it. I have K+K passive pickups glued into both my Kostal guitars and I've never had any issues.

Michael,

It appears to be totally passive. Thanks for the input. I suspect you are correct. I'm being too picky.

Happy to help!

Look, if you're never going to use it then you can have it removed as sometimes the wiring can rattle a bit. If it's not bothering you then keep it!

Lovely guitar by the way, congratulations!

Can't help with the question, but what ever Michael says is good enough for me, no one knows tone like he does.

I just wanted to say congrats on a fantastic guitar. A McConnell has been on my guitar dream list for a while!

Congrats on the McConnell! I also concur with Michael re: pickup.

Best,

Smile Passive pups ...

I have had John K install K&Ks in all four of his builds for me. Even though I am trying to shave off every gram I can.

They sound great on the rare occasions I plug in, and weigh very little. But, I would not want the extra weight of a battery and pre amp inside my axes. Plus stuff could possibly come loose and make a mess... rare but it can happen.

If you do plug in, try a Red Eye preamp. They are super simple and sound fantastic with a KK, and with my ES1.3 equipped RT too!

Looks like a killer axe! Have fun!!!

Beautiful Guitar! Quick question, are you sure there are only two transducers on the plate.

Cincy2, really nice score on the McConnell! Is that the one that was on sale at Cedar Rock? I was admiring its recorded tone very much. It looks like you need to not only post a detailed review on the Haland but also on your new McConnell as well!

Sounds like you have a K&K pickup which is a really nice one if you plug in. Another consideration can be the Audio Sprockets Tonedexter to run the pickup through on to your amp to get the most natural amplified tone. Beautiful guitar.

I'm a big fanboy of the K&K Pure Mini pickup, and a properly installed set of three transducers adds a negligible (IMHO) amount of weight to the bridge plate.

I'm curious what other "electrical components" are present in the guitar? There shouldn't be anything else in there...

I was hallucinating. :-) No other parts.

Whoops, I reread and you have three transducers. Congrats on the McConnell! Beautiful!
