Yamaha Love: Link to MV's FGX5 Review
With all of the love for Yamaha here, I thought many might enjoy Music Villa's recent review of the new FGX5 model they got in. Can't wait to try it out when the local shop gets one in.

They forgot to demo the new piezo+mic+soundboard pickup system.

I like Yamaha, but not at that price point. If I'm spending $1400.00 plus, I'll go with Martin, Gibson or the like.

This is the Yamaha love thread. No buts allowed.
Yamaha has instruments at just about all the price points as Martin and Gibson, but doesn't offer the blinged-up shell-inlaid beauties those brands do in those lofty price levels above $4k. Our daughter's 900-series Yamaha flute is worth what you have in your Collings and your Froggy Bottom combined. Their Atelier-series violins (with baked-spruced tops) are played by concert violinists in major orchestras worldwide. I just wish they would make a tiny parlor guitar.

The CSF3M is a solid body parlor that has a really sweet sound. I agree that Yamaha stands for the highest quality in almost every mainstream instrument, and their products are used in concert halls, arenas, and pro recording studios throughout the world. I would venture that if you were to put on a blindfold, these new Yamahas would compete well with iconic American acoustics like the D18, but as they haven't hit the street, this is only an educated guess.

I like the low end on the Yamaha in the video - really nice tone coming from that guitar. I wish I could play like that guy.....
These are intriguing. I am in the market for a mahogany B&S dread - am considering used Martin D-18's and Gibson J-45's mostly, but am hesitating on the price tags - trying to justify the spend on a guitar I really don't need. I am a big Yamaha fan, but already own an FG700S and an LL16DR - not sure I want another Yamaha if I proceed with a mahogany dread, but these are making me pause - perhaps I will wait to try one before deciding. I won't have buyers remorse if I feel I got good value and the Yamahas are always a great value.

I love my LL16 and have been eyeing these FSX3 as a possible acquisition down the road. I dare say Yammie is hard to beat at all price points.

A big thumbs up to Yamaha’s newest FG RedLabel series. Six days in with my FG5 and completely stoked!
This is right up there with my SCGC Vintage Artist in many ways. Nice review by Music Villa. |

I played an FS3 this week - nicer than ANY Martin I've played. Seriously... and I've been a Martin fan for years. (Caveat: I'm not a great player, but I think I know a decent instrument when I TRY to play one.)

I hope the big boxes like GC bring them in, and soon.
There's another couple guitars newly introduced from Ibanez I am also looking forward to trying out, the new fingerstyle series Artwoods, priced about where the X Red Labels are. Solid solid bone bone ebony and like Yamaha, an all-new pickup system.

Do try the FS5 (MIJ) if you have the chance, it may blow you away even more than the FS3... Yes, the Yamaha Red Label Series are great guitar. I’m glad to be a happy owner of the FS5 for about 23 days now. I know I’m still in the “honeymoon” period but I can safely say this guitar is a keeper. The Yamaha CSF3M is an impressive parlor guitar. Looks beautiful and excels in finger-picking more than strumming.

On my recent trip to Music Zoo, a high end shop on Long Island with lots of custom Martins and Taylors, and Gibsons and Lowdens, the Yamaha LJ16 was the guitar that I didn't want to put down.
I can only hope that the Martin CS J-17 jumbo, that I'm waiting for, sounds as good at twice the price! |

I love Yamaha guitars. I have always had one in my collection from day one in 1970.
However [not but] if I am going to spend over $1,000.00 on a guitar, it will be on an American built guitar that will retain more of it's re-sale value over the years. With that said, used high end Yamaha guitars are fantastic values.

For a D-18 at $2,460 new, you'll get $1,800 used, about a 27 percent drop. So that value-hold thing isn't really there, other than the fact that there is better recognition of quality when one sees a D-18 listing, versus whatever Yamaha is shown used that cost the same $2,460 when new. Maybe enough difference to get a nice Martin glove leather strap.
