Guild D 20 vs Martin D 15
Hi guys, I’m in the market for an all mahogany dread. My two candidates are the Guild D 20 and Martin D 15. I’m a singer songwriter, I would use only for strumming/ singing. Thanks!

Nice decision to have to make. I haven't played either model, but from the demos I have heard I think I prefer the Guild. I also prefer the aesthetic of the Guild to the Martin. Play both

Both are super quality and sound. I have the guild in brand new condition.

The new US Guilds have a tight 12" fretboard radius
Martins have been 16 for as long as I can remember. I find the flatter Martin fretboard easier to play. Lots of folks like a tighter radius though, especially if they play a lot of barre chords.

What differentiates the two guitars most to me is the playability. You really should get your hands on each, especially if there's a shop where you can A/B them.

I am a big fan of Guild and Martin. My favorite is the D15. I have two variations of the D15m and love them more than my more expensive guitars.

This may not be an apples to apples comparison
But i own an older guild '78 d-25 is which almost the same as the new d-20 ( basically renamed the D-25 which is no longer made ) Both of these are workhorses - what i consider to be a workingmans professional guitar I like the new guild company , way more respectable to Fender , fender was basically trashing the Guild company. Im my opinion Fender acoustics are the bottom of the barrel - cordobas are not. - ive seen the martin D-15 -but havent played one Its a lower price point model for Martin model - sorry- havent had the chance to play one -my local Martin dealer no longer exists Not saying you should buy the Guild - but what i am saying is that you should open up your horizons and include other makes and models in your search.

I know opinions vary on just about everything, but almost everyone would agree that Fender made wonderful Guilds. I would put New Hartford factory Guilds up against Guilds from any period.

Re: Fretboard Radius
While your mileage may differ the 12" radius was a revelation for me. Barre chords actually ring pure now after years of struggling on flat fretboards. 1.75 nut width on a 12" radius is definitely my spec sweetspot.

The Guild is going to have a brighter tone than the Martin, like a Taylor but without the zing to the trebles. The Martin will have a great "woody" tone to it. I have a Martin and two Guilds, love them all, so no bias here.

I have not played the Martin d-15. But I've got the Guild D-20 - fit and finish are perfect and it's got a darkly rich tone that befits a mahogany guitar. The disadvantage of the Guild is that I think it's string spacing is narrower than the Martin. However the Guild has all natural appointments like bone string holders and a rosewood bridge.
