Gibson L 00 Studio, are these faults acceptable?
OK, in this excellent forum I read several times someone mentioning Gibson's poor quality control, another reason why it took me so long to decide to buy one.
This L 00 Studio plays beautifully, but upon further examination there are several faults. Now, for me I wouldn't mind as long as it's playable, but most probably in some years I will want to sell it and I don't want to be stuck with an unsellable item. It s not cheap either. Can you please give me your opinion about these (I think small) faults? I will bring it to a physical shop to evaluate it but I d like to hear what you think too. So, from the pictures maybe you can t see much, but: the bridge is not completely straight, maybe 1-2 millimetres higher on the right side. The white stripe at the bottom is not in the middle, nor is the button/pick up hole. Looking inside the sound hole, one of the laths? I think that s the name is not straight like all the others I ve seen, is a bit crooked on one side. Finally, around the neck there are these signs of glue, and it s not sealed as it should be, there are like little cracks going inside. Should I return it? I am wary to return it because it plays so nice and other guitars I ve got had terrible action, but if there are structural faults I should (return it). https://ibb.co/ZTH6qDs https://ibb.co/1dGhFZq https://ibb.co/hyDt3TS https://ibb.co/8c8t4pk https://ibb.co/TYcGvMS https://ibb.co/XLKnsRh https://ibb.co/C7R99p8 https://ibb.co/dkVNRfZ Last edited by JimandJoni; 05-09-2023 at 12:53 PM. Maybe I don't understand what you're seeing, but I don't see anything on that guitar that would make me want to send it back. If you like the way it plays and sounds, I think it would be perfectly safe to keep it.

Of the issues you mentioned, the only thing I can see in the pics provided is a little bit of excess glue which is no big deal at all. I think you're nitpicking and should just enjoy your new guitar.

I don't really see the alignment flaws you're pointing out, but I'm not there measuring it.
From this thread, it seems that you're not happy with the guitar for others reasons, as well. Might want to just cut your losses and pick something else. |

Gibsons bridge on the rectangle bridges are designed to be taller on the bass side and lower on the treble side. My LG-2 bridge is exactly the same as was my J-35 bridge, which I previously owned.
There doesn’t look to be any issues other than the excess compound around the fingerboard meeting the top.

You can avoid the whole "resale value" thing by never selling it, but if the flaws you have found are as invisible as they seem, it shouldn't be an issue anyway.

I know it's a chunk of change, but the studio is a guitar built to be cheaper than the standard, and should not be judged to the same standard as far as cosmetics are concerned. If it doesn't intonate, that's another matter. We live in and age where $2K is the new $1200, $4k the new $3200, etc. Something has to give to meet a price point. If the guitar works for you, enjoy it. Plenty of very desirable vintage guitars have quirks like slightly offset necks. Gibson in particular.

Are you sure that is glue? It looks to me like polishing compound that didn't get wiped off. see if you can use your finger nail to lightly scrape it off.

That white stripe at the bottom is definitely way off! It’s like 1/2” wider on one end. There’s no way that’s intentional. I’ve never seen that on other guitars!

I don’t see what you see, but pics don’t tell the whole story. My feeling is that when you’re looking for flaws on something new it sounds like you just don’t like it and should probably go another direction. Selling guitars used comes with no guarantees. Tastes and trends change. Even if you manage to keep a mint guitar spotless, you might still take a hit when you sell.

The bottom strip getting progressively wider is intentional.

It’s beautiful. Just play it and enjoy it.

That strip on the back side of the bottom is intentionally wider at the top and narrower on the bottom. That strip is decorative and meant to hide the joint where the two sides meet. I see nothing wrong with that guitar.
