Default Must see Venues/Musicians in NOLA

headed to New Orleans. Got the fine and not so fine dining covered. Much to my dismay, finding a familiar musician or music venue is not as easy as I thought it would be. Any suggestions on must see performers or music venues for Jazz or Blues or anything but punk in NOLA other than the perennial favorite Preservation hall ?

Thanks !

John

Default Wow !

Wow ! 70 views and no suggestions ! Not sure what to make of that. Surely other AGFers have gone to the Big Easy. HELP !

Hi John,

Don't want you to be lonely so I'll bite, but I'm not sure how much help I can be.

I went once for 3 days. This was about 5 years ago. Had no plan. Was with my wife whose taste in music is not as eclectic (she says weird) as mine.

All I can tell you is music is everywhere. It's on the street, kids playing horns. Anywhere in the quarter and surrounding areas you will hear all sorts of styles coming out of the bars, not just jazz. We had dinner in a big hall with a great zydeco band (sorry I can't remember the name of the place).

On the way to NOLA we had a wedding in Nashville and also went with no plan for music. It will find you in either city, not to worry

Default what i found

trombone shorty is paying but not at a time or cost I can afford. John Hyatt vs Hiatt is at the house of blues the same night and is doable. Otherwise it's like hunting for a needle in a haystack as I neither recognize the names of the clubs or musicians so it's hard to know where to go and who to see. I can run a "Top ten Venues in New Orleans" with the best of them, but really need some information from someone who has been there, done that. I've been there three other times just winging it and never really found what I was looking for, so trying to be more proactive this time.

Thanks

John

Jazz Vipers at the Spotted Cat on Monday nights and Rebirth at the Maple Leaf on Tuesday nights are the musts in my book.

Eric’s on track with his suggestions and also go online and check out what’s happening at Tipitina’s, House of Blues, and DBA. If John Batiste is still playing Sunday nights at DBA, it is worth seeing and extra bonus in that DBA has a gazillion beer choices on draft. French Quarter is very tourist oriented and only music IMO worth checking there is House of Blues. My suggestion if you want to wander the French Quarter is do it during the day because in the last couple of years, they have started having problems after dark with petty theft (teenage gangs causing isolated mayhem, aargh!)

Compe’re Lapin, Emeril’s, Luke, Dominica, and Brightsen’s are our favorite New Orleans restaurants we would recommend checking out. If you can spend the $$$$, Commander’s Palace is a bucket list choice for a dining experience.

Despite the petty crime issue to be cautious of in the FQ, I think you will find that NOLA is about the friendliest city you can visit so have a great time and plan to gain 5 pounds!

For me N.O. Is easy. Walk the district, hear music, head that way, sit down, have a drink - repeat. Easy. Now it’s beach time. I play later.

WWOZ is the great, local radio station in New Orleans. Load their app on your phone and you can use the very well managed music calendar as a guide.
On Frenchman St, Maison always has great music...try to catch Auraora Neiland there. Shes ridiculous! If you can catch Shannon Powell at Pres Hall, it's religious!
Snug Harbor is a great place to catch a show..you'll probably bump into a Marsalis or a Neville there.
Find Jon Cleary!! nobody greater
John Boutte can be a thrill too..
