I wonder the same thing Steve when I saw how Fender mounted their strap pins to the wall of the upper bout. Couldn't they just use a large washer and bolt to achieve the same stability?

Or, does adding the mass inside provide more stability?

Well I haven't seen the Fender setup, but it could be that the sidewall is not strong enough to be supported by just a fender washer, and needs the larger surface area of a block to spread the load. (Much like a "backing plate" in boat construction.) This wouldn't be an issue with a CF sidewall.
