Default My Experience with Fiddle Tunes

Over the years I have bounced around in different styles of music and guitar playing. I always got a kick from a fiddle tune played on a guitar. Though I found them boring to play. The reason for that was that I didn't understand them. I played what was taught and thought if I expanded on it I was not being true to the tune. Not that long ago I went back to playing with a flat pick and, well, picking. With what little bit I know about music theory and my interest in song structure I ran into some fiddle tunes that didn't make sense to me. So I started looking into this whole subject more. Wow! That took my into the subject areas of Celtic music and it's off shoots drones, Mixolydian, Dorian and Aeolian modes and the anti music theory of Irish/Celtic music. For lack of a better way to state it. I started reading about Irish and Celtic music. Fiddle, mandolin and other folk instrument forums, blogs and assorted pages. Bagpipes anyone? I learned different song structures, for me anyway. I get it now. How fun and what a gas. Socially this folk music scene is amazing to me. Music "sessions" in this area are a type of group jam session where anyone and everyone is welcome. I never knew.

You might like Harvey Reid, a fascinating individual and master guitarist. Among other talents, he arranges a lot of old fiddle tunes for guitar. Plays autoharp wonderfully as well.

Love it.

I don’t play much in this style but for a mediocre effort at Irish Washerwoman (something like https://youtu.be/RLk1Qbg9PN8). It’s always funny to me which songs sound good or trigger memories or just work for whatever personal reason.

The singular melody line of fiddle tunes always makes me wish I had a flute or panpipes or something...

I think this is a good example of what you're talking about:

Gotta love those "aha!" moments, where something that you just didn't "get" suddenly becomes clear. One of my favorite things about playing music.
