Very cool! I've never seen an old timer do that, but smacking the grime of the strings probably helps!

That is a good workaround for those times when you really can't change strings... a fellow taught me that one in the early 70's, and I've used it, from time to time, ever since. Good one, Tobey!

Doesn't last that long, unfortunately, but long enough to get through a show!

The man who showed me this, John Hugg, was the first player I met who had a hand built dreadnought, a gorgeous guitar that sounded otherworldly to me at the time...
So, not an "old guy" but quite a player...

I have read of Doc Watson doing that after playing each time to prolong the life of the strings; not necessarily to revive a dead string. He would do it without detuning the string.
