UK Suppliers
I'm gearing up towards my first build, but I'm struggling to find anywhere to buy my wood from where I can get my hands on it before buying. Obviously there's plenty of places online but I'm not sure about building or buying on the strength of a photograph. Not looking for anything crazy, any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

google 'luthier supply's uk'
Uk suppliers can be / are expensive but for material for one instrument you've not got a lot of options, if you buy more materials try further afield eg http://www.madinter.com/b2c/index.php?idioma=2 and http://www.riwoods.com/cataloghi.aspx

Yeah that's what I thought, I've found a few website that look alright, really I want somewhere I can physically choose the wood. Looks like it might be taking a punt online though.

Based in Turkey - top quality, well-seasoned wood (unlike some of the stuff from Madinter I've heard), cheap and swift delivery. Some top luthiers advised me to use them and I've not been disappointed. Jonny

the Turkish dealer is a little further afield but excellent quality, I got a few sets of these in '08, when the exchange rate was good, I dont think they have any 'master' sets at the moment, £50 a piece then.

UK suppliers
Hello
For UK suppliers, you've got David Dyke, Touchstones tonewood, exotichardwoods.co.uk ... I don't know many but that's a good start,if you need anymore help... Regards |

It won't save you any cash, but if you're in the UK over the winter needing to hold the wood in your hand might be a good excuse to jump down to Bursa, Turkey where you can actually see the sun!

Sorry I'm not familiar with UK wood suppliers and I understand your desire to personally select the woods but I do know that in the US LMII and Allied Luthiery are considered reliable.
http://www.lmii.com/ http://www.alliedlutherie.com/ I'm sure there are others and you will get plenty of recommendations.

I've bought wood from Allied Lutherie in the US and had it shipped to the UK with no problem. If you select from their 'weekly special' pages you get to select the exact set you want.
I ended up sending the set of celebes ebony I bought back to the US for Mike Baranik to build into a custom guitar. The results are truly spectacular.

David Dyke is very personable and knowledgeable and welcomes visitors. A little more locally you could try Craft Supplies in Bradwell, Derbyshire. They don't have much of a range of stuff but you may find what you're looking for and it wouldn't be a big deal to visit for you.
