Blaren - great build pics. Is the $999 build a satin or gloss build?

That's correct, Ed only does satin finish on the Halcyon's.

We have had quite a few inquiries on custom builds for the Halcyon's, so I just wanted to share an update from Ed on available woods. Standard back and sides: African Mahogany. You can upgrade to Primavera or Ovangkol for an additional $100. Rosewood availability and pricing TBD on new supplies. The Primavera is killer for Parlor or OOO 12 fret!

Standard top is Sitka Spruce, but he has a few nice Lutz Spruce tops available still for no upcharge, but that may change with future supplies.

No cutaways or fancy-schmancy woods are available for the Halcyon's, but he will do anything you want in his high-end Tinker line. There's no charge for pick-up install, nut width, scale length (within reason!) or string spacing requests for the Halcyon's. We sell K&K Pure Mini pick-ups for $130, or you can mail him one.

Feel free to email or call us at 604-971-2893 to custom order. Price is the same - $999, though Bluedog will only ship with a hardshell case.

Isn't this going to make it more difficult for the top to take on the desired radius?

I am obviously missing something, but exactly what I cannot determine ..
My guess is protection for the soft spruce top. Some put a towel or newspaper down between the dish and the top. If there is nothing between then the 60 grit sandpaper will press lots of tiny little divots into the spruce. I'm guessing that is his reason though I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the back for that purpose.
