The redwood top under finish.

The granadillo back under finish.

Curly maple back of headstock.

You may notice that the top does not "look" the same as it once did. Neil ended up deciding to re-top the guitar. It was all final sanded and prepped for finishing, but when he did a final close inspection, there was a bit of the binding he wasn't happy with. So, he decided to route off that binding and re-do it. Simple right? Nope. After the binding was redone and rescraped and resanded, the top thickness was thinner than he was happy with...so, off with the old top and a new one on.

Everything is good now and back on track! Neil is much happier with the guitar. Things are progressing well now.

Looks great! Right now I'm most impressed by that Neil did a new top like that. Must have been many hours extra work.

How's the sound affected by the short scale, btw?

I got some more pictures of the guitar in finishing. There is still about 4 weeks to go until this baby is done!

Aw man, that's lovely!
Kudos on the retop...lots a trouble, but doesn't it look sweet!

Hey Steve

Thanks. Looks even better in real life, I think. Those pictures are not the best.

Yes, the retop was a pain but in the end you gotta do what ya gotta do.

FYI about the finish. This is a Varnish. This one is about half way through the process. It will get 10-12 very thin coats of varnish, each of which are level sanded between coats. So in the end, the finish is very thin and very smooth and ready for the final polish.

The whole process can take as long as the entire build process, for me anyway.

Neil

I know what you're saying, I just went through the same thing. A router got away from me and I ended up having to retop a guitar that was not only a segmented rosette, but had a radial grain spalted maple purfling...in the end, it makes us better builders...right? Great looking build, Neil!

FANTASTIC looking guitar. I love the redwood top very beautiful and I'm sure it will sound as good as it looks. And as far as the granadillo is concerned I am a huge fan of the looks. I've never seen it used before but I hope to see more. I would love to hear what it sounds like. Hopefully you can post some sound clips once it's finished. The guitar as a whole is so aesthetically pleasing. I'm a huge fan of how the maple contrasts the other materials. Cannot wait to see it done! Great work!!!

Just a quick update...

Neil was not happy with the way that the finish was turning out. So, we decided to re-do it. Neil has a friend close by who will be shooting the guitar with Pre Catalyzed Nitro-cellulose Lacquer. He has done some work for Neil in the past and his finishes are flawless.

Obviously, this will delay the guitar being ready for at least a month. That's ok. Graciously Neil offered to send me a guitar to use, and I will trade it back when the guitar is ready. The guitar arrived a few days ago. It's a concert body shape guitar. The guitar sounds great. It's very loud and has a great tone.

This is making me look forward to my guitar being ready even more... hehe..

Oh well, good things come to those who wait and I'm continuing to be patient for the payoff at the end.

Just a couple of small updates on this guitar.
1) The guitar will be fretted with Jescar EVO fretwire.
2) The guitar will have gold Gotoh 510 21:1 tuners.

I'll post a further update when I have more to report.

I HAVE UPDATES!!

Neil received the guitar back from the finisher, and boy does it look spiffy! Neil will be putting the guitar together this week, waiting a week for things to settle and then it will receive a final setup before getting in my hands. The countdown is on. Just a couple of weeks to go!

Once I receive the guitar I will spend some time getting to know it before posting my final thoughts on the guitar along with pictures, soundclips etc.

The guitar is coming together. The neck is attached. The frets are installed and levelled. The bridge is on. Strings will be coming next.

Well the guitar is finished.
All that is left now for Neil to do is to complete a final setup and get it into my hands. The guitar looks great I think. These are the pics I have from Neil. I will take some of my own when I get the guitar.
Here is a Soundclip that Neil sent: https://www.box.com/s/kglrola9f9zwqiab006k
