Spohn Guitars Koa/Swiss Spruce OMC build
Hi, this is my first post here. I am from Germany and I am currently studying lutherie at university in Markneukirchen in my fifth semester.
This thread is about the guitar I have to build for this semester. It will be my OM model with a cutaway, some specs listed below. Swiss moon spruce for the top Slightly flamed koa for the back and sides Ebony fretboard Mahogany neck Custom segmented rosette Ebony bridge Segmented backstrip inlay Ebony bindings Body wedge 25" scale Alessi tuners This is the swiss spruce top And the koa back The sides are a three piece laminate with paulownia for the middle and dyed maple for the inner layer. I will use some of this dyed birch for the rosette... I will post more photos when the build is going on.

Cool shape and wood choices, all from the town in Germany where CF Martin I was from! Looking forward to following along.

Max,
I checked out your Facebook page and your work is very nice! I particularly like your Birdseye Maple/Moon Spruce guitar. I especially like the view of the end graft on that one. There's something refreshing about the more "plain" looking sides on it with the segmented end graft and dark that really makes those aspects stand out. I'm looking forward to seeing your building progress on this one. I'm very interested to see the dyed birch in your rosette! |

I was working on some inlays the last few days... so here are the results. The rosette is made of dyed birch, wenge and some rusty metal. And the segmented backstrip inlay... |

Beautiful workmanship. So how will this project be graded and by whom? Is tone a consideration or is the grading strictly on workmanship? Personally I'd say you have passed with flying colors!

So cutting the top out for the neck before being glued on with the neck block is a different approach than it seems most luthiers take. Any reason for this or just another way to do the same thing?
