Pitch pipe to get the A, then tuned the other five by ear.
In the band, we tuned to the keyboard.

I purchased a couple of tuning forks at the local music shop; I had an E and and an A and kept them close by wherever I had my guitar.

In the very beginning I was taught that if I was just playing by myself to tune the A string where it sounded good to me and tune the rest of the strings relative to the A. Or if I was playing with the group to tune to the leader's guitar. Then at some point I got a pitch pipe.

I bought a a solid state Seiko metronome that has a 440HZ tone you could turn on. Before that I guessed and lots of broke strings.

Had a pitch pipe. Then a tuning fork. Was a lot tougher playing electric as most settings where I played were loud.

I bought a Boss tuner as soon as I could.

We all just tuned up to each other, never thought about whether we were in the right key or not, just happy to be in tune with each other! We all had better vocal ranges then so we could hit the notes no matter what key we were in!

I sometimes used a tuning fork, sometimes a piano. If I was playing with other guitar players, we tuned to each other.
