There, I said it.

I was down in town this morning running errands, which included getting gas and running through the quarter car wash. Both are right by the highway, speed limit 35 mph there in town.

I counted 7 incredibly LOUD Dodge pickups that drove by, most with their foot in it, going too fast and all were incredibly LOUD. Seems like they all had a bazooka for a tailpipe. Some had two. And did I mention they were all incredibly LOUD?

I don't get it. Driving one of those things would get real old, I would think.
My actively farming his land friend and the plumber we use at our vacation place drive them. Some of my facilities vendors drive them. For some reason theirs are not obnoxious and they don't seem to prompt bad behavior.

In my earlier post I brought up what the camera systems at our stores see - the cameras at crosswalks and intersections. Other big pickups are frequent fliers for being caught with naughty or down right horrible behavior but the Dodges seem to stand out.

This is a bit of a joke among us who've had to or have to use them for work. I mean the people playing SuperTrucker vs the work trucks. Our now retired police sergeant friend didn't think it was so funny. She observed a whole lot of bad behavior from the big pickup drivers and others who have a vehicle as an alter ego.

Another thing that always gets me is parents who let their dogs bark incessantly ... or their kids screams their lungs out while playing. I was brought up with my parents' golden rule never to bother "the others", be it the neighbours or people in a restaurant, train, hotel or wherever. Making music was the only exception allowing me to make noise, but even that was with windows and doors closed, and not after 22h.
I didn't exactly need this as motivation to engage more in intellectual or creative activities as a way of having fun, but I realise it could have worked that way
My epidemiologist friends say it's judicious behavior, public health, good diet and exercise - not loud pipes - that save lives. Also good genes and luck but you can't manage those in same ways.

People with kids and dogs get so used to the yelling and or barking that they don't hear it. I had a very nice neighbor who had an obnoxious barking dog. I talked to him many times while the dog was yapping and he didn't even notice he was so accustomed to it. Anyway, I too don't like barking dogs either. I'm good with kids yelling.

I went out to mail something after reading this thread earlier, and
there it was... a giant Dodge pickup, lifted, rusty, dirty, LOUD and
trailing a 007-grade diesel smoke screen screaming off the line from
a red light...

I remember borrowing my Uncle Dan's Jeep pickup back around 1982
and the headers cracked open when I was 100 miles from home...
what a long trip that was!

You haven't given us the impression that dangerous and inconsiderate behavior are on your daily agenda. The patterns our cameras and LP staff see, and what our police sergeant friend would say are not so brand specific as they are the style.

Very different groups buy and like the pickups. I don't lump them all together but there's no doubt some who like the category have helped earn a reputation. On top of that many people make simple 2 choice judgements in scenarios where there's a range.

True, he did not admit that operating that Hemi in a monster vehicle (which is undoubtedly fun & rewarding) is on his *daily* agenda

Great thread! I like to vent, it doesn't mean I hate the rest of humanity. Ok, so things irritate me, and in all honesty I'm a little embarassed about it, but... The thing about packages getting smaller while the price goes up. To me the worst part of that is that they'll hang up some tag that indicates that the item is "on sale" or "super saver" and THAT price is higher than the last time I bought the same (larger package) product at its regular price. Seriously, is it that they think we don't notice? I'm used to it but I still feel that I'm being insulted. Don't tell me it's raining.
One more...people who litter. I always imagine that these same people would be happy to tell me about their rights, or how I should feel about some other issue. It upsets me, perhaps more than it should. I read something a while ago that keeps banging around in my head, "I am no longer willing to accept things that I can't change, I'm determined to change things that I can't accept." Maybe it's not reality, but I like the concept, and it's become part of my daily life. Thanks for letting me vent!

Same. Is it stronger packaging? Or weaker us?

Stronger packaging... I use razor knifes and tin snips to get into
things these days. I think they don't want people to be able to get
into the packages in the store for fear they might tamper with
the anti-theft doodad in there.

I am guessing that dangerous and inconsiderate behavior is actually multilateral across all types of vehicle categories
But arguably much more noticeable with large loud and raised pickups

As I have noted in other threads the most egregious behavior I ever experienced while riding my bicycle on the highway by my house was from the sociopathic driver of a Subaru who intentionally swerved over to within about 1 foot of my handle bars while going 70 mph

That said as someone who has owned and used pick up trucks for over 40 years I think the loud, jacked up, pickups are silly, juvenile, and quite dangerous for roll over potential and fairly problematic to worthless for towing
.

Yes, bad behavior can come from all over. However, it is really interesting the way our work site cameras and LP staff plus our police sergeant friend quantified it.

Having had to have a pickup or larger for 40 years I am glad to drive something else and like renting what best fits the job. Being a news and data junkie, I also like the economic ramifications of having less footprint or my choices having negative externalities to impact others.

My wife probably has a point on some vehicle popularity tied to all the obesity and health problems. Except for our civil engineer and carpentry firm neighbors with pickups, every other one of several pickup owners in my neighborhood is either noticeably overweight or seriously obese. I see this all over in vocational and personal vehicles.

Yep. In Miami, trucks seem to work a strange kind of magic on their (male) drivers, who, in a disproportionately high number of instances, speed, jump lanes, and intimidate other drivers by hanging on their tails.
