Thanks for the cinnamon method. I'll try it. I've tried another method but it hasn't worked as well as I'd like. The infestation has died down a fair amount, but I still see the little (and I do mean little...tiny) critter around.
Ironically I've always been interested in social insects...from a distance. I'm fascinated by bees and ants in particular and their habits. I just don't want them in my living space. |

I have used salt to stop ants in the past. It seemed to work well.

My printer tells me that my newer ink cartridge, it was working just fine, is out of ink. Yet the graph that tells me it's out of ink shows that the ink is full. So, it won't let me print anything. One moment on a computer can turn into a half hour of trouble shooting and irritate the heck out of you.

Trail map in a big hiking park/game reserve near my home is 3 feet by 3 feet. This useless legend (stashed discretely off in a corner) is maybe 3" across. On what planet is it necessary to arbitrarily orient north so it's not at the top of a square map - anywhere?
Ironically, my fellow military air traffic controllers (last century) would announce keggers at their houses and draw even worse maps than this. Why, for crying out loud... whyyy??? Last edited by tinnitus; 09-12-2022 at 10:37 PM. |

I decided I have a rant or peeve - people who start a lawn mower at breakfast or dinner times.
Yesterday a neighbor had a special event for his involvement in Rotary and some seniors where a part of the famous university marching band and a bagpipe group were present. Two bonehead neighbors wrecked it with starting to mow their lawn or have their gardeners show up. It was pretty clear something special was up - vehicles arriving, escorting some elderly in his home, and backyard setup. It doesn't have to be a special event. Quite often you will see families enjoying meal time or it could be early on a Sunday AM and someone starts a lawn mower. ![]()

I can't stand how speech patterns in the US are shifting toward some kind of California valley girl type pronunciation and word choice. Traditional vowel sounds are being screwed with in a way that, to me, make the speaker sound unintelligent and ditzy. In general I hear this more in the speech of those who are socially "progressive" and of particular younger generations. Words like "best" come out sounding like "bast". "Kit" comes out sounding like "ket". "Dress" like "drass".
And the word choices / butcherings of sentences. Example: "This food is like, literally, like, probably, sort of the worst ever." This crap speak is highly concentrated in "reality" tv programming. But I hear it spreading into the real world. Particularly in the younger generations. |

At work we also have a lot of first line workers with minimal education. They tend to be very far from progressive and have the same speak if they come from a counties with 1/2 to a million+ residents vs rural. My wife teaches ESL at a huge high school where those students are at huge opposites in terms of demographics. Beyond grammar, they try to imitate pop culture whether they are in poverty or the kids of wealthy people. My own kids in college think this talk is more so in the generally conservative greek (fraternity, sorority) communities but they don't talk like upper Midwest kids do either. Times change. Edit: I know vocal fry bothers some people but that might also be a sign of the times. Maybe that's in part the criticism here. We have several young women who are great leaders where I work. I have to think about what bothers others. To me they are just more of our precious staff where I work to love them all. I care more about staff being polite in other ways and their being successful.

Yes, the vocal fry!! Can't believe I forgot to mention that. Cannot stand it. It is such a forced / unnatural manipulation of the vocal chords. Definitely agree with a lot of this being an imitation of pop culture. That's part of what bothers me - how so many people just follow trends of social behavior like sheep. I could be wrong about it being a progressive thing. Good call. My sample group may be too small to conclude that. It is just where I personally see it happening. I'm not at all saying that those who speak like this cannot be great workers, leaders, and all around great people. Just venting about something in particular that bothers me. That's the point of the thread 🙂 |
