Default Suggestion/Recommendation - looking for a Somogyi type MOD D

I am interested in a Modified Dreadnought. I am new to this, can you offer me suggestions who would you recommend for a build, nothing fancy, happy with a base model with budget less than $7500 (not sure if my budget is realistic or not) and am happy to be in a long wait list.

For a "Somogyi type" MD you'll want to look at the former Somogyi apprentices: many offer their own variation of the MD and have a tonal profile in the same vein as Ervin himself, the designer of the MD. But unfortunately no former apprentice (to my knowledge) has a base price that will fit with your budget. Tom Sands is probably the closest, starting at £7440.

I second Ernesto's recommendation of Julian Gafney! He is a fairly recent Somogyi apprentice and he builds wonderful instruments. I was blessed to play one at Woodstock a few years ago, and I still think about it!

As an AGF moderator, I am not sure this is the best place for this thread, but other than the general section, I am not sure where to move it. If I move it there, I am sure someone would suggest it be here. So, I will leave it here for now.

I would make a suggestion, if you are looking for specific S. Mod D. the answers are quite obvious, the man himself which your budget does not allow, the apprentices, which also your budget may not allow, or used market. NOW if you have a sound and style you like, if you were to describe that to us in more detail, there are many many many talented luthiers who display their work here in the Custom section that we could recommend at that point. Describing the sound you like would help us a lot. Many would also fit into your budget easily as well.

Tom

It would seem to me that the most recent apprentices would be the place to look for that sound. I don't know what Mark Gaiero's price point is going to be, but he's going to deliver his first guitar soon.

At that price, I think only Julian Gaffney as the rest of the completed apprentices' base model price is higher. Also, of the most recent few apprentices, I think Julian has specifically aimed to re-create Ervin's sound, whereas others have aimed to create something slightly different.

Hey Pandaroo,

Not a new custom build, but you can pick up a used Beauregard at or close to your budget, here on the forum or via Dream Guitars. He has Somogyi experience - http://beauregardguitars.com/about/

They are often in BRW, but they do come up in ABW as well (I used to have one)

Cheers,
Col
