Default Share your VIGF Custom Builds!

Hey Everyone,

I though it would be great to start a thread of the custom guitars that will be showcased at Vancouver Guitar Festival in August!

I'll begin by sharing a local Vancouver builder GR Bear Guitars. I've had the privilege of seeing these instruments during his build process. Amazing craftsmanship!

Rosette detail...Simple yet classy.

Check out this gidgee and blackwood!

Love the V joint and end headstock detail

Shanks for sharing my work, Mer'! See ya in August!

First Rosette: Wenge & Malaysian Blackwood, I used pieces from the OM Malaysian/Carpathian I built for SBAIC 2016, and the Wenge/Carpathian OM more recently. I love to bring old elements as "déjà Vu" in my new work.

2nd Rosette: EIR and Claro Walnut for the OM Sitka & Walnut (I took wood from the Back)

3rd Rosette: Mastergrade Amboyna Burl, I made another sister-rosette for the Lutz Top (the currently one is a nice Red Spruce)

About the sides, we have from left to right: Claro Walnut, Old Growth figured Honduran Mahogany, Wenge, African Mahogany

I would add that the exhausting list of guitars I'll bring for VIGF (and Woodstock), is this one:

- OO-12 Higuerilla/Lutz

- OM Higuerilla/Carpathian

- OO-12 Honduran Mahogany Old Growth/Lutz

- OO-12 African Mahogany/Engelmann

- OM Claro Walnut/Sitka lightly Bearclawed

- Grand Auditorium Wenge/Adirondack (a new model I just designed)

Thanks for starting this thread Meredith, I plan on bringing my small jumbo and dreadnought models as shown below. I am attempting to complete my parlor model in time as well, similar to the one I've included in this set

Nice thread Meredith, you're giving us another good reason to visit Vancouver.

Interesting to see GR Bear using gidgee. This is another Australian acacia, but it grows in a different part of the country to our best known acacia - Tasmanian blackwood. Would be great to play those two guitars side by side and see how they differ.

Leave it to the Aussies to name a wood "gidgee." I like just saying that word.

Thanks for organizing such a lovely show Meredith, and thanks for starting this thread.

I’ll hopefully be bringing two guitars.

Guitar one: lutz over Lapacho

Guitar two: Italian spruce over Indian rosewood

The guitar I have made for VIGF seems pretty modest compared to some of the work I see here, but I have strung it up a few days ago, and I took advantage of the beautiful day to take some pictures against the backdrop of my garage. Weather permitting, I plan to ride my Ducati up to BC with just this one guitar riding pillion. We'll see what really happens.

This is an almost traditional 00 in Honduras Mahogany and Adirondack. 13 frets to the body, it has perfectly quartered Jatoba binding and similarly well cut maple purflings. HHG and Oil Varnish, of course. The incredibly nice burl used throughout is an unknown species, at least to me. Ebony fingerboard and bridge, and no rosewood anywhere, which seemed crucial.

The binding bears a closer look, IMO:

That’s one fine looking Guitar Bruce! I am fully romanced by the idea of riding up to the guitar show with an instrument on your motorcycle.
