Hey skil,

Here's a thread I started a week or so ago on the Open Mic section about mandolins. Hope it helps:

my first was an Antinori off ebay.

dirt cheap and too narrow to fit my big splodgy fingers onto.

then I started building my own.

now all my instruments are home made and very affordable!!

One thing you might want to bear in mind with inexpensive mandolins is that they may not have a truss rod. I don't know how important it is for mandolins to have a truss rod, but I always think it's nice to have one, just in case.

I know they're not on your radar, but I worked my way up through the Ovation mandolins starting with the Celebrity (very well-priced for what you get), then an American-made mm-68, and just recently received this mm-68-LTD. I couldn't be happier and am keeping my eye out for another mando. I'm watching all of the affordable brands mentioned on this thread, but I wouldn't be surprised if I wound up with another "O".

Pre-2001 (pre-China) Saga Kentucky KM-160s A Style that I am selling. It is a very good mando with solid tone, sustain and punch. Even the "chop" is pretty good for a less than $xxxx instrument.

I have also had Mid Missouri mandolins and a Kentucky KM-750 F Style in the past, and I get to mess around with a lot of mandolins, 'cause I hang out with bluegrass folks. (I know; we are judged by the company we keep...) The earlier Saga mandos are, imho, far and away the best bang for the buck. Solid wood all around, good components, etc. (I still want a Rigel, or a Mix, though...)

BTW: I've PM'd the OP. 10-4. Over and out.
