Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't really have the time (or inclination) to stick foreign objects under the strings since I don't really have time between songs to put them there and if I shoved something in quickly I'm afraid that it might shift in mid-performance (insert joke of your own creation here).

The guitar synths are a bit pricey for the one song I need this banjo sound for.

To be specific, I am playing "Heard it in a Love Song" by Marshall Tucker band and then segueing straight into "Eastbound and Down" by Jerry Reed, which is where I need to morph straight into a banjo player

Any other ideas?

this prompts the question "which brand of toilet paper produces the the most authentic banjo tone"?
