One String That Sounds Good On All Your Guitars
Have you come across a string that sounds good on all your guitars?
It may not end up being a favorite but you can always go back to it knowing it will sound good. I'm a strummer so my choice will most likely be totally opposite to a dedicated finger-style player, so that's perfectly understandable. And yes, it's all subjective. For me it's been D'Addario Nickel Bronze .012" Lights. Warm enough on a bright sounding guitar yet clear enough on a warm sounding guitar.

For me it’s D’Addario EXP 17s. They always sound at least good - and often excellent - on every guitar I’ve tried them on. Plus they last a long time. They are my baseline string I know I can always go back to when I dive down the what-strings-for-this-guitar rabbit hole.

Elixir Nano lights.
If I don't get around to playing a particular guitar for 6 months I know it will still sound great. What's not to like? |

Actually, no, but I’ve narrowed it to two. Lowden PB 12s for the rosewood guitars and GHS Americana 12s for the mahogany guitars. Occasionally, I’ll use GHS Vintage Bronze for a slightly different flavor.

For the last few years, I have been won over bu the Santa Cruz parabolics. Been playing the medium tensions on everything except the PJ which has to have the low tensions. I did find that when I put them on the Lowden 388c, the overtones were too much for a couple of days. That guitar was recently traded for something short scale. Very disappointed in the recent price increase on the parabolics. Down to about 4 sets of strings and it’s time to order. I do love the sound of those strings on my SCs, Flammang, and the 0018vs.

DR Sunbeams are great. They were my favorite strings until I tried Curt Mangan phosphor bronze. They really sing on my HD-28, my Eastman E2OM-CD and my Ovation 12 string. They're also the best strings I've found for most of my mandolin family instruments. But the resonator, archtop and gypsy jazz box all sound better with something different.

I keep and play a dozen different guitars and none of them strung with the same strings. Woods used in their construction vary so I really like them to sound unique. No stage-play, recording only.

I've got it down to two ($$$ & $). 1)SCGC Mid-Tensions sound outstanding on several of my guitars and no worse than very good on everything else. They also last a long time for me. 2) John Pearse Phos Bronze (Lights) sound at least very good on everything I try them on. (Bruce: I agree w ur description of D'Addario NB Lights and I find them great on a couple of my guitars but not so much on others.)

for years i've always been able to trust John Pearse Phosphur Bronze lights for any guitar.
still do. over the last 2 years i've really leaned towards the Gibson packaged Phosphur Bronze lights-I think they are made by GHS and pretty much a basic GHS phosphur bronze string set but i'm not sure on all that. i think i read that on the internet a few years ago so we know it has to be true. both of these brands last a long time for me, ring out really nice with a round, full note-especially the trebles, and feel to my hands as having less string tension than other brands. d |

Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze. Usually light gauge. They sound good, last for a long time, and don't produce much finger squeak.
